DURHAM, N.C. - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced its 2017 Division I Preseason Rankings Tuesday, with Duke posting three singles players, two doubles tandems, and one freshman on the national lists. In addition to the preseason rankings, the ITA also released the names of competitors invited to participate in the 2017 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships, held Sept. 30-Oct. 8 in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Sophomore Meible Chi, ranked 20th, headlines the trio of Duke singles players in the ITA poll. Chi qualified for the 2017 NCAA Singles Championships, reaching the second round of the national tournament during her first season as a Blue Devil. Joining Chi on the poll is senior Samantha Harris and junior Kaitlyn McCarthy. Harris opens the season ranked 54th after spending the majority of the 2017 season in the first position while McCarthy is ranked 57th in the ITA poll and is currently on a 21 match unbeaten streak in singles play, dating back to Feb. 10, 2017.
Duke is represented on the doubles list by the 25th-ranked tandem of McCarthy and junior Ellyse Hamlin and the 60th-ranked duo of Harris and freshman Kelly Chen. Chen also makes an appearance on the freshmen poll as she is the fourth ranked newcomer by the ITA.
Selections for the 2017 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championship includes the pair of McCarthy and Hamlin who appear in the doubles main draw after winning the ITA Summer Nationals in Fort Worth, Texas earlier this summer. Harris and Chen will try to join them in the main draw as they start the tournament in the doubles qualifying draw. Harris and McCarthy also garnered spots on the singles qualifying draw alongside Chi. Chi may be able to skip past the qualifying draw as she is on the singles main draw alternate list. In addition, Chen appears on the pre-qualifying singles list and Hamlin is among the pre-qualifying singles alternates.
Duke opens its fall season of play Friday, Sept. 15 at the Duke Invitational in Cary, N.C.
