CARY, N.C. – On the first day of the 2017 fall campaign, the Duke women’s tennis team opened strong with nine wins on Friday at the Duke Bonk Invitational. The Blue Devils notched four doubles wins in the morning session and then came back to earn five singles victories in the afternoon session during the first day of the tournament at Cary Tennis Park.
Juniors Kaitlyn McCarthy and Ellyse Hamlin both had perfect days, as the International Tennis Association’s (ITA) 25th-ranked duo earned two doubles win and then each dropped their singles opponent for three wins on the day. Hamlin knocked off NC State’s 79th-ranked Anna Rogers 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 while McCarthy beat Illinois’ Mia Rabinowitz 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (4). Duke’s second win over a ranked opponent came when sophomore Meible Chi and freshman Kelly Chen combined knock off Furman’s 55th-ranked tandem of Katty Weymouth and Danni Vines 8-4.
The Blue Devils return to the court at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning for the third and final round of doubles play.
