PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. - On the first day of the Riviera/ITA All-American tournament, the Duke women’s tennis team had freshman Kelly Chen advance in the pre-qualifying draw in Pacific Palisades, Calif. on Saturday.
Junior Ellyse Hamlin and Chen both started the tournament in the singles pre-qualifying draw and each earned the first of the three wins needed to advance to the qualifying draw. Hamlin opened the tournament matched up with SMU’s Anzhelika Shapovalov and the Fairfield, Conn., native advanced with a narrow 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 win. However, her singles run was ended by Ole Miss' Sabina Machalova 7-6, 6-3. Chen started her day by dropping Air Force’s Tami Fumagalli 6-4, 6-3. Chen then took on USC’s Rianna Valdes, and moved on with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory.
Chen will play her final match of the pre-qualifying draw on Sunday needing one more win to advance to the qualifying draw. The qualifying draw will get underway on Tuesday.
