DURHAM, N.C. – A senior leader of one of the nation’s top defenses pulled in conference honors on Tuesday, as Duke’s Schuyler DeBree was named the ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced.
This is the second weekly ACC honor for a Blue Devil this season and 33rd in school history, as fellow senior EJ Proctor was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week after shutting out No. 3 West Virginia earlier this season. This is also the first weekly honor of DeBree’s career.
The Fair Haven, N.J., native split the award with North Carolina’s Julia Ashley, while the Tar Heels’ Alessia Russo earned ACC Offensive Player of the Week laurels.
DeBree led a Blue Devil defense that posted a pair of 2-0 shutouts against NC State and No. 16 Florida State, en route to a school record 6-0-0 start in ACC play. The senior played the full 90 minutes in both contests and has now gone the distance in 10-straight matches and in 12 of Duke’s 13 matches this season, playing a team-high 1,259 minutes.
The two wins also increased Duke’s program record winning streak to 13-straight matches and moved its season winning percentage to .929, which is the best in the nation.
DeBree has been the leader of a Duke defensive line that has posted back-to-back clean sheets and five in the last six contests. Those five shutouts came all against ACC foes, moving the 2017 edition of the Blue Devils into a tie for fifth in the school record book for most shutouts in conference play. In that stretch, DeBree and the Blue Devils have shutout a pair of ranked foes (No. 16 Florida State and No. 18 Notre Dame).
On the year, Duke’s defense has been notorious for shutting down opposing attacks, allowing just seven goals and posting a .494 goals against average that leads the ACC and is 15th nationally. In the last 10 contests, Duke has outscored opponents 24-3, with only allowing two goals in ACC play so far this year. Duke also leads the ACC and stands 13th in the NCAA with a .643 shutout percentage.
After taking down the Wolfpack and the Seminoles, DeBree will lead a Duke squad into its final home match of the regular season on Sunday, Oct. 15, as the Blue Devils host the Miami Hurricanes on Senior Day. Kickoff is set for noon ET and will be broadcast on RSN. Fans can also access the broadcast on ACC Network Extra, which can be accessed on WatchESPN.com and the ESPN app.
