DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke and N.C. State men’s tennis teams will co-host the USTA/ITA Carolina ITA Regional this weekend at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. More than 128 competitors will be in action as the tournament stretches from Friday through Tuesday.

The singles and doubles winners from each of the 12 USTA/ITA regions advance to the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, held November 1-5, at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa in Palm Desert, Calif., and the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif.

Seven of the eight Blue Devils will compete this weekend: freshman Sean Sculley, sophomores Nick Stachowiak and Spencer Furman, juniors Ryan Dickerson, Jason Lapidus and Catalin Mateas and redshirt junior Nicolas Alvarez.

Alvarez enters the draw as the No. 1 seed and faces Davidson’s Yash Parikh in the opening round Friday at 8 a.m. Alvarez has played just two fall matches, going 1-1 at the ITA All-American last week.

Joining Alvarez as a seeded player in the draw is Furman, who enters at No. 7. Furman owns a 5-1 record this fall and takes on Mario Paccini of Elon Friday at 8 a.m. in the first round. Furman captured the Bonk Invite A1 draw championship and went 1-1 in the ITA All-American Championships main draw. Mateas is the No. 6 seed and is 3-2 this fall. In his last outing, at the ITA All-American Championships, he went 1-1, bowing out in the qualifying round of 64. He starts the regional with Kyle Frankel of Elon at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

Stachowiak, the No. 9 seed, opens at 8 a.m. Friday with Kasey Countee of East Carolina in the opening round. Stachowiak has played to a 5-2 mark this fall, claiming third place in the A1 draw of the Bonk Invite and coming within a win of moving to the ITA All-American Championships main draw after taking two victories in the qualifying rounds. Dickerson, who is seeded 10th and took third place in the A2 draw of the Bonk Invite, leads off at 10 a.m. Friday with Ben Wayand of Charlotte.

The Blue Devils’ lone remaining undefeated player in singles this fall is Lapidus, who is 4-0 and won the Bonk Invite B draw. He opens at 1 p.m. Friday against Leonardo Menzes of Charlotte. Sculley will begin his second event in a Duke uniform as the No. 25 seed on Friday at 2 p.m. versus Felipe Osses-Konig of Elon. Sculley went 2-2 at the Bonk Invite and claimed the consolation third place title of the A2 draw.

Following this weekend’s qualifier event, the Blue Devils will continue in-state action with the 49ers Fall Invitational in Charlotte from October 27-29.
