CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Against a stellar field, the Duke women’s golf team swept both the team and individual Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational titles Sunday in record fashion. The Blue Devils shot the second-lowest 54-hole ledger in school history with a 31-under-par, 833, while senior Leona Maguire turned in a tournament-record 12-under-par, 204, at the 6,379-yard, par 72 Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Duke was in a battle for the team title with second-ranked Alabama the entire day. Even though the Blue Devils held a 10-stroke lead heading into the final round, the Crimson Tide went low Sunday with an 18-under-par, 270. After leading most of the day, Duke suffered five bogeys over a stretch of holes 14-16, and Alabama took a two stroke advantage.

The Blue Devils pulled it together and connected on six birdies over their final four holes to claim the title. Trailing by one stroke late, junior Virginia Elena Carta tapped in for birdie on No. 17 and freshman Miranda Wang turned in birdies on three out of her final four holes to help push the Blue Devils to the victory.

Duke signed for rounds of 283, 271 and 279 for a 31-under-par, 833, to finish one stroke ahead of Alabama (834). South Carolina (846), Arkansas (851), North Carolina (856), Wake Forest (862), NC State (863), Louisville (867), Virginia (868) and Vanderbilt (872) rounded out the top 10 teams. It marked the 15th time in school history the Blue Devils have won the Tar Heel Invite.

"Well, you know, you learn about your team as the season goes along," commented Duke head coach Dan Brooks." You learn a lot when there’s situations like this when you find out what they’re capable of. I was just extremely pleased with what I saw this weekend."

A native of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire claimed her ninth career victory and her second straight Tar Heel Invitational title with rounds of 69, 66 and 69 for a tournament-record 12-under-par, 204. She won by one stroke over Ainhoa Olarra of South Carolina (205).

“I'm really proud of both the team and my individual performance this week,” said Maguire. “We played some true Duke golf this weekend against a very high quality field. Everyone really dug deep coming down the stretch to hold off Alabama and it gives us great confidence leading into our final event of the fall.”

Maguire opened the final round with a par, bogey and birdie, before reeling off six straight pars that included a tough up-and-down on No. 6. She featured back-to-back birdies to open the back nine to get to two-under for the day. Maguire added a sand save par on the 481-yard, par five 13th and then rolled in a birdie on No. 14. Her second bogey of the day occurred on No. 15, but once again responded with her fifth birdie on the 361-yard, par four 16th to get back to three-under. Maguire had a par on 17 and then hit her approach on No. 18 into the greenside bunker. She blasted an amazing shot to within inches and sealed the victory with the par. Maguire finished the day with eight fairways, 12 greens and a team-best 26 putts.

A two-time National Player of the Year, Maguire totaled her second victory of the season and ninth of her career. She owns five rounds in the 60s so far this season and has 27 over her career.

Carta, who hails from Udine, Italy, was bogey-free for the first 14 holes that included birdies on No. 5 and No. 13 to get to two-under. After a bogey on the 15th, Carta closed with two huge birdies on No. 17 and No. 18 to finish with a three-under, 69. She stuck her approach on the 17th to four foot and on 18 she sunk her six-foot birdie attempt. Her eight-under, 208, was the lowest 54-hole output since her record-breaking NCAA Championship ledger of 203 as a freshman. Carta finished ninth overall hit a team-best 17 greens Sunday.

"I was with her, walking with her the last two holes, she put some of the best swings I’ve ever seen her take on the shots coming in on her last two holes," said Brooks.  "That’s under that kind of pressure. You can bet she knew that we were close and yet she puts some great, rhythmic swings on the shots, so I was very impressed by that."

Freshman Jaravee Boonchant collected rounds of 72, 68 and 71 for a five-under, 211, to finish tied 13th. A native of Bangkok, Thailand, Boonchant had four consecutive pars to start the day and then rolled in a 10-footer for par on the 505-yard, par five sixth hole. She then suffered her lone bogey of the day on the seventh and then connected on her second birdie on the 10th to get back to one-under. Boonchant closed with nine straight pars to finish with a 71 and her third straight top 15 placement to open her collegiate career.

With the best start to the day for the Blue Devils, sophomore Ana Belac carded three birdies over her first five holes to move to three-under. She had her putter going from the start by rolling in 15-foot putts on No. 2 and No. 5. Belac had a bogey on No. 7, a four-foot birdie on No. 10 and a bogey on No. 11. She held a two-under score through 14 and had a bogey on No. 15, but drilled a 25-footer for birdie on the 18th and closed with a bogey on No. 1 to finish with a one-under, 71. She hit 14 greens, 11 fairways and had 31 putts.

Wang, who is from Beijing, China, birdied her first hole (No. 3), bogeyed No. 4 and then birdied No. 6 to get back to one-under where she stayed until the No. 14 hole. She had bogeys on No. 14 and No. 16 to drop to one-over. Wang turned it around on the 518-yard, par five 17th as he rolled in a 15-footer for birdie. After a par on 18, she went back to the front nine to finish her round. Wang registered a 21-footer for birdie on No. 1 and then a six-footer for birdie on No. 2 to finish as a counting two-under-par, 70. She hit 15 greens and nine fairways as she finished tied 30th overall at even-par, 216.

The win for Brooks was his 130th of his coaching career and second in three tournaments this fall.

"We really showed that in this tournament," said Brooks.  "I saw so much poise in the last day of this tournament. I was really, really happy with what I was seeing. When you’re out there you can sense when the team has moved up on you and when things are close. They’re getting the vibe from each other, they’re seeing the other team play well.  You can just get the sense, so they knew they were having to play well. They weren’t under any false pretenses. They knew that it was close."

Duke will be off until the Blue Devils next travel to the Landfall Tradition, which will take place Oct. 27-29 in Wilmington, N.C.
