CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Duke women’s tennis had its only doubles team in the ITA Regional Championships advance with an 8-2 win in the Round of 32 on Thursday.
Playing together for the first time, sophomore Meible Chi and freshman Ema Lazic were seeded ninth in the main draw and were awarded a bye to the round of 32. There the Duke duo bested South Carolina’s pairing of Nikolina Jovic and Ingrid Martins 8-2 to advance to the Round of 16. On the singles side, senior Rebecca Smaller played in the second round of qualifying. She fell to Elon’s Montana Moore 6-0, 0-6, 7-5.
Chi and Lazic will continue their doubles run on Friday as they match up with Furman’s 55th-ranked duo of Danni Vines and Katty Weymouth at 9 a.m. Duke will have its final six singles players begin the singles main draw as well. Senior Samantha Harris and junior Kaitlyn McCarthy are the first Blue Devils to play with both matches starting at 9 a.m.
