DURHAM, N.C. – Redshirt junior Nicolas Alvarez was able to represent his home country and Duke University this week at the ATP World Tour Lima Challenger Copa Claro, held in Lima, Peru. Alvarez earned his first ATP Challenger Tour victory during the event.

In the opening round, Alvarez defeated Emilo Gomez 6-1, 6-3 to secure his first ATP Challenger victory. Alvarez then took on No. 106 Marco Cecchinato of Italy in the second round and fell 6-3, 6-2.

The two were even at 1-1 in the opening set before Alvarez broke to take a 2-1 advantage. Cecchinato responded with four straight victories to take control of the set at 5-2. Alvarez got a game back to make it 5-3, but Cecchinato served out for the set. The second set had Cecchinato jump out to a 5-1 advantage. Alvarez again got a game back on his serve, but Cecchinato closed out the match with his service game.

Alvarez also played doubles at the ATP Challenger, falling 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (5) with Jose Hernandez-Fernandez to Inigo Cervantes and Fabiano De Paula in the first round.

In 2016, Alvarez helped his native Peru to a 3-2 victory against Venezuela in the championship match of the Davis Cup Group II Americas tournament in mid-September. He was the youngest player on either squad in the Venezuela match and clinched the deciding point with a comeback 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2), 6-1 victory against Luis David Martinez. Also against Venezuela, Alvarez defeated ATP No. 686 player Ricardo Rodriguez in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-0.

Duke has two fall events left with this weekend’s Charlotte 49ers Fall Invitational and next weekend’s Wake Forest Fall Invitational. The Blue Devils kick off the dual match campaign on Saturday, January 13, 2018, in Scottsdale, Ariz., to face Arizona State.
