INDIAN WELLS, CALIF. – The Duke women’s tennis team got the ITA Fall Nationals underway with a trio of wins on Wednesday.
The day started with singles matches and two Blue Devils advanced. Senior Samantha Harris did not drop a single game as she moved past California’s Anna Bright 6-0, 6-0. Junior Kaitlyn McCarthy nearly matched her, beating Colorado’s Linda Huang 6-0, 6-1. Freshman Kelly Chen bowed out of the singles draw after a tough three set match with Stanford’s Michaela Gordon, losing 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
On the doubles side, both Duke pairs needed a tiebreaker to decide their matches. Harris and Chen advanced against Northwestern’s Erin Larner and Madeline Lipp 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7). McCarthy and classmate Ellyse Hamlin lost their first doubles match of the fall season, falling to Georgia’s Mariana Gould and Katarina Jokic 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8).
All four Blue Devils will play again on Thursday. Harris will match up with Washington's Stacey Fung at 12:30 p.m. and McCarthy will play Oklahoma State's Vladica Babic at 1:15 p.m. Chen will play in the consolation draw, starting with a match against Vanderbilt's Christina Rosca at 11 a.m.. Harris and Chen will also play in the doubles round of 16, drawing Ole Miss' tandem of Sabina Machalova and Natalie Suk at 5:30 p.m. Finally, McCarthy and Hamlin playing in the consolation draw against Texas' pairing of Marta Perez Mar and Dani Wagland at 6 p.m.
