ROANOKE, Va. –The Duke University wrestling team opened its 2017-18 season with a solid showing at the annual Hokie Open at the Berglund Center in Roanoke, Va. The Blue Devils finished the long day of wrestling with three titles, a runner-up and two fifth-place showings combined in the open and freshman-sophomore divisions.

The Blue Devils improved on their two titles a season ago with the young talent performing well in their first collegiate action. In the open division, it was senior Jacob Kasper capturing his second consecutive crown at heavyweight. Mitch Finesilver, wrestling unattached, brought home top honors at 157, while Alec Schenk took fifth at 197.

Duke only placed one in the freshman-sophomore division a year ago with Josh Copeland finishing sixth. This year, Duke finished with a title, a runner-up and fifth place. Matt Finesilver cruised through his bracket at 174 for the top spot, while Josh Finesilver was runner-up at 133. Ben Anderson rounded out the place-winners in fifth at 157.

Preseason No. 6 at heavyweight, Kasper did not miss a beat. The Lexington, Ohio native won his first three bouts easily with a fall, tech fall and major decision to set up a match against No. 15 Nathan Butler of Stanford.

In an early season top-25 battle, Kasper and Butler were tied 3-3 after two periods. On bottom to start the third, Kasper escaped eight seconds in for a 4-3 lead and then added a takedown with three seconds to go for the 6-4 victory and title

Wrestling at a new weight of 157, Mitch also made relatively easy work of his early opponents to land in the title bout. He did have to use a late takedown in the quarterfinals against Gardner-Webb’s Tyler Marinelli to score a 6-3 decision, but the first-place match was a different story as he cruised past Larry Early III of Old Dominion, 8-0.

Schenk, also bumping up a weight to 197, shook off a tough start against Army’s Rocco Caywood and won five straight matches to take fifth overall. He garnered all five victories by decision, often outlasting his opponents in the third period.  He clinched his spot on the podium with a pair of first-period takedowns and never looked back en route to the 5-2 decision over Sawyer Root.

At 174, Matt shined with bonus point victories in each of his first four bouts. The rookie finished his day with a 6-2 decision for the title. In his four matches prior to the championship, he sacrificed just two points – an 18-2 technical fall. Matt did not give up a single takedown on the day.

Josh, at 133 pounds, had a similar run to the title match before dropping a tough 7-6 decision to Virginia Tech’s Cole Manley. The Hokie rookie used an escape and takedown in the third period to go in front. Josh gave up just two takedowns in his first four victories.

Rounding out the top finishers for Duke was Anderson at 157. He fell into the consolation bracket in his second match and rattled off three victories with ease to earn a top-five finish. He needed just 32 seconds to finish his day, the fastest pint of the afternoon by a Blue Devil.

Other highlights included Zach Finesilver advancing to the consolation semifinals as he adjusts to jumping three weight classes to 165. Josh Copeland also fell in the consolation semifinals at 133 of the open division, while rookie Kaden Russell made his way through to the consolation semis at 184 in the freshman-sophomore bracket.

Duke returns to action Nov. 19 at the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia. A selection of Blue Devils also will compete in the Wolfpack Open at NC State.
