DURHAM, N.C. – Former Blue Devil All-American and current Toronto Blue Jay starter Marcus Stroman will serve as the keynote speaker at the Duke baseball program’s sixth annual First Pitch Banquet. The event is set for 5:30 p.m., Jan. 27, 2018 in Scharf Hall in the Coach K Center for Academic Excellence.
“To say we are excited Marcus Stroman will be the keynote speaker at our Sixth Annual First Pitch Banquet is an understatement,” said head coach Chris Pollard. “This is an incredible time in Marcus’ career, coming off a World Baseball Classic Championship and a Gold Glove season. He’s such a great representative of the Duke baseball program and I cannot wait to hear the message he will deliver on January 27.”
Stroman became the 10th Blue Jay to win a Gold Glove Award, earning the honor this past season after her ranked second among American League pitchers with five defensive runs saved. During the 2017 season, Stroman went 13-9 with a 3.09 ERA that ranked tied for fourth in the AL. The right-hander also surpassed 200 innings for the second consecutive season and did not miss a start.
After making his Major League debut in 2014, Stroman is 37-25 with a 3.61 career ERA over 562.2 innings. In addition to his Gold Glove Award, Stroman was named the 2017 World Baseball Classic MVP and was chosen to grace the cover of Canada’s edition of MLB: The Show ’18, available on PlayStation 4.
Stroman was Duke’s first MLB Draft first round pick after the Blue Jays selected him No. 22 overall in 2012. Stroman ranked fourth on Duke’s all-time strikeouts list with (290), while his 3.27 career ERA was the third-lowest in school history in the aluminum bat era (since 1974) and the seventh-lowest all-time. He had nine career double-digit strikeout games, two career complete games and added seven saves during his time in Durham. As a junior, Stroman led all NCAA pitchers in strikeouts with 136 and finished second in strikeouts per nine innings (12.49) during his final season at Duke.
