No. 11 Duke Falls on the Road at Villanova, 64-55

VILLANOVA, Pa. – The 11th-ranked Duke women’s basketball team fell on the road at Villanova, 64-55, Sunday afternoon at the John ‘Jake’ Nevin Field House in Villanova, Pa.

Redshirt senior Rebecca Greenwell became the first player in Blue Devil history to amass 1,500 points, 600 rebounds and 200 made three-pointers during the contest.  Villanova recorded 45 points off of three pointers and limited Duke to just 16.7 percent (2-of-12).

The Blue Devils opened the contest with a 12-10 lead after one period of play. Redshirt senior Lexie Brown totaled eight of those 12, highlighted by a steal at the Villanova three-point line to blow past three defenders for an easy two in the paint. The Wildcats kept the Blue Devils quiet for just over three minutes as Duke shot 35.7 percent from the floor. 

Redshirt sophomore Haley Gorecki tallied her first field goal of the season with a strong baseline drive to open the second period. Gorecki picked up an and-one to bring in a season-high five points to put the Blue Devils ahead by double-digits. Rookie Jade Williams recorded an assist to Greenwell for a deep three just as the shot clock expired.

Heading into the half, Duke held the 28-22 lead.

Villanova came out of halftime on a 14-2 run to take the lead for the first time on the afternoon. Duke picked up two quick fouls to start the second half with one resulting in a four-point play for the Wildcats. Villanova found its rhythm from behind the arc in the third period, making seven treys in 10 minutes of action for the Wildcats (53.8 percent). The Wildcats tallied just five points from non-three-pointers in the third and limited Duke to eight points.

Trailing by 12, Brown returned to the game after picking up her fourth foul in the third.Brown set up her first three of the afternoon to cut the lead to nine with just over four minutes to play. The Wildcats picked up two offensive boards with two minutes left. Villanova had only eight for the contest to Duke’s 18.

Brown led the Blue Devils with 16 points and sophomore Leaonna Odom recorded her second career double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

The Blue Devils outrebounded Villanova, 44-26, and tallied 30 points in the paint to the opponent’s six.  Kelly Jekot led the Wildcat offense with 23 points, going 7-of-9 from behind the arc.

The Blue Devils will travel to Norfolk, Va., to face Old Dominion Wednesday, Nov. 22.Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m., on ESPN3. The squad will return home after the holiday for a pair of matchups against No. 18 Oregon State and Presbyterian. The games will be at 3 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively, on ACC Network Extra.
