Six to Represent Duke at December North American Cup

DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke fencing team will compete in its second North American Cup (NAC) this weekend in Portland, Ore. Representing the 2017-18 squad on the West Coast Friday through Sunday will be seniors Alec Ajnsztajn (epee) and Haley Fisher (saber), sophomores Aidan McGinnis (epee) and Ben Stone (saber) and freshman Maria Papadopoulos (epee).

Fisher will kick off competition for the Blue Devils on Friday, competing in Division I Women’s Saber. Registration will end at 8 a.m., as Fisher enters the weekend seeded 37th out of 98 participants.

Fisher is coming off posting the best record among women’s saberists during the 2016-17 campaign, going 53-20 for a .726-win percentage. The Kennesaw, Ga., native placed ninth during the individual portion of the ACC Championship and rounded out her junior year in 20th at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional.

Ajnsztajn and McGinnis will conclude competition on Friday with Division I Men’s Epee, with registration closing at 1 p.m., and are seeded No. 123 and 103, respectively. This will be the second NAC of the fall for both of these Blue Devils.

Stone will represent Duke in Division I Men’s Saber Sunday morning seeded 14th of 127 competitors. The New York, N.Y., native is coming off an eighth-place finish in junior men’s saber at the November NAC.

Rounding out the weekend for the Blue Devils will be Papadopoulos in Division I Women’s Epee on Sunday afternoon. Papadopoulos enters the competition seeded 68th out of 141 epeeists.

Duke will also be represented this weekend by former Blue Devil and current volunteer assistant coach Leslie Marx. Marx will compete as the top seed in Vet-50 Women’s Epee on Saturday afternoon. Marx captured gold in Women’s Vet-50 Epee at the 2017 Veteran World Championships in October in her first year eligible to compete at the Vet Worlds.
