PORTLAND, Ore. – Members of the Duke fencing team traveled to the West Coast Dec. 8-10 to compete at the December North American Cup (NAC), hosted by the United States Fencing Association in Portland, Ore.

Redshirt freshman Ben Stone highlighted the Blue Devil performances by placing 22nd in Division I Men’s Saber. Stone went 4-1 in pool play before receiving a bye in the table of 128. He ultimately fell in the table of 32 to eventual sixth-place finisher Gabriel Armijo (15-12).

Senior Haley Fisher hit the strips for the first time this fall and notched 40th in Division I Women’s Saber. Fisher posted a 3-3 ledger in pools before falling to Gillian Litynski in the table of 64 (15-12).

Freshman Maria Papadopoulos represented the Blue Devil women in Division I Women’s Epee in Portland. Papadopoulos concluded competition in 63rd after going 3-3 in the first round of pool and 1-5 in the second round. The rookie cruised to victory over Miriam Grady (15-5) in the table of 128 before falling in the table of 64 to Sarah Lurye (15-8).

Senior Alec Ajnsztajn and sophomore Aidan McGinnis competed in Division I Men’s Epee and placed 137th and t96th, respectively.

Duke was also represented over the weekend by former Blue Devil and current volunteer assistant coach Leslie Marx. Marx secured gold in Vet-50 Women’s Epee after posting a perfect 6-0 ledger in pool play. Marx earned a bye in the table of 64 and won five consecutive bouts to capture first place, defeating Monica Exum (10-6).

Select Duke fencers will participate in the final NAC before the regular season Friday Jan. 5-8 in Virginia Beach, Va.
