HONOLULU, HI – The Duke women’s tennis team closed out the second day of play on the Hills Family Trip with a perfect record in doubles matches and winning three singles matches after a brief rain delay.
“Overall I thought we did a good job competing today,” said head coach Jamie Ashworth. “The conditions with winds over 30 miles per hour were extremely tough to play in and I felt like we held our composure and did not make that a factor.”
After going 3-1 in doubles on Wednesday, the Blue Devils followed that up with a perfect 3-0 record on Thursday. Sophomore Meible Chi and freshman Hannah Zhao stayed perfect as a tandem, beating Hawaii’s Michelle Pits and Roxanne Resma 7-5. Also winning their second doubles match in Hawaii was the International Tennis Association’s second-ranked duo of juniors Kaitlyn McCarthy and Ellyse Hamlin. McCarthy and Hamlin beat Pepperdine’s Ashley Lahey and Evgeniya Levashova 6-4. Picking up the third Duke win of the day was senior Rebecca Smaller and freshman Ema Lazic who cruised past Hawaii’s Marina Hruba and Alzbeta Houbova 6-0.
The singles matches had a brief rain delay, but the Blue Devils were still able to pull out three victories. Chi finished the Rainbow Invitational with four wins in four matches as she beat Hawaii’s Roxanne Resma 6-1, 6-3 for her second singles tally. Lazic won her first singles match of the spring when she beat Hawaii’s Houbova 6-0, 7-6 (2). Picking up the team’s first win over a ranked opponent this spring was freshman Kelly Chen. She bounced back from dropping the first set to beat Pepperdine’s 28th-ranked Lahey 6-7 (7-5), 6-4, 6-4.
Zhao dropped a match against Pepperdine’s Adriana Lekaj 6-3, 6-1. Hamlin fell to 31st-ranked Mayar Sherif 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. Smaller and McCarthy both lost in tough three-set matches. Smaller lost to Hawaii’s Nicola Dolakova 6-2, 6-7 (7-5), 6-0 and McCarthy came up short against Pepperdine’s Luisa Stefani 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.
“We definitely got better today and are looking forward to playing in our first dual match next Wednesday,” Ashworth said.
The Blue Devils will return home for the start of dual match season. Duke will host its first home match of the year on Wednesday, Jan. 24, when Elon comes to Durham.
