DURHAM, N.C. - It may have been chilly and rainy in Durham, but that didn't stop the Duke Blue Devils (5-3) from catching fire at the plate, as Jameson Kavel and Katherine Huey sparked a Blue Devil offense that dominated the Purdue Boilermakers (1-7) to the tune of 8-1 during day two of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
Kavel recorded the first three-hit contest in program history, including her second triple in as many days, while Huey blasted her second bomb of the weekend to highlight the highest offensive output by the Blue Devils in the program's history to date.
After a scoreless first two innings, the Blue Devils struck first behind a Kavel RBI triple that drove home Haley Wymbs. Jazmine Moreno followed with a sac fly to center that would push Kavel across for the second run. The major blow came three batters later, as Huey blasted a two-run shot over the fence in left to push Duke's lead to 4-0 after three.
Purdue would get one back in the bottom half of the third, however the momentum would be short lived as the Blue Devils responded with three more runs in the fourth. Hannah Pridemore led things off with a pinch-hit walk, then moving over to second on a Wymbs sac bunt. Kavel stepped up to the plate for her second hit of the day, getting a base knock to right field to put runners on the corners. After Kavel stole second to put two Blue Devils in scoring position, a Moreno single, Rachel Abboud bunt and Purdue fielding error would allow three runs to cross home plate and elevate Duke's lead to 7-1.
Duke tacked on its final run two innings later, as a Kavel double and steal combined with two walks and groundout would load the bases for Huey. The Blue Devil ace would work the count full and take ball four for the bases-loaded walk, giving the Blue Devils an 8-1 advantage. Purdue threatened in the home half of the sixth, but the first double play in program history closed out any chance of scoring a run. Freshman Brianna Butler, who threw 3.0 innings and only allowed two hits, retired her final four batters to close out Duke's third-straight win.
Kavel led all players with a 3-for-5 day at the plate, scoring three runs, driving in another and coming a home run short of the cycle. The speed demon also turned in the first multi-steal game in Duke softball history, taking two bags on the day to improve to 6-for-6 on the year. Moreno, Huey, Wymbs and Reilly Metzger also contributed hits on the day.
Huey threw 2.0 total innings of work, allowing just one hit and no runs to grab her team-leading fourth win of the season. Peyton St. George earned the start for the Blue Devils, going 2.0 innings and striking out three.
The Blue Devils will wrap up their first home weekend with a 12:30 p.m. showdown against Penn State in the final game of the 2018 Big Ten/ACC Challenge from the Duke Softball Stadium. Fans can catch the contest on ACC Network Extra, which can be accessed through WatchESPN.com and the ESPN app.
