DURHAM, N.C. - The brooms were brought out Sunday afternoon on East Campus, as the Duke Blue Devils (6-3) defeated the Penn State Nittany Lions (0-6) 7-2 to close out the Big Ten/ACC Challenge with a perfect 4-0 showing at the Duke Softball Stadium.
Duke and Virginia Tech teamed up for a perfect 8-0 showing at the Durham site for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, helping give the ACC its second-straight win in the contest, 26-14.
For the third time this weekend, both Duke and its opponent were quiet in the opening frame, as it was three-up, three-down on both sides. Duke opened the scoring in the second inning thanks to runs batted in from Huey and Dominique Salinas. Raine Wilson got things started with double to left, her first of three hits on the day. After Huey opened her three-hit day with an RBI single, a groundout would push pinch runner Ashleigh Rodriguez into scoring position with Salinas’ double bringing her home to give Duke a 2-0 advantage.
Wilson and Huey would get things started once again for the Blue Devils’ next round of scoring, as singles from each would set up Amelia Wiercioch’s first-career single elevate Duke’s lead to 4-0. A single from Haley Wymbs two batters later would bring home Wiercioch, pushing the lead to 5-0 after four.
A Penn State fielding error would kick off the fifth frame of play, followed by a single from Rachel Abboud and a double from Wilson. Huey would record her second RBI of the contest with a single to left, pushing Duke’s lead to 6-0. The Nittany Lions responded with two runs in the bottom half of the frame thanks to a throwing error on the Blue Devils and an RBI single. However, the momentum would not last long as a flyout closed the inning, helping Duke escape the jam with minimal damage.
Abboud accounted for the game’s final run with a sacrifice fly to left to score Jameson Kavel in the top of the seventh. Peyton St. George made her second appearance of the weekend, entering in the seventh to strike out two and force of popup to secure the program’s fourth-straight victory.
Wiercioch picked up the win in 4.0 innings of work, allowing just three hits and striking out two with no runs allowed.
Huey and Wilson each led the way with three-hit showings, while five other Blue Devils contributed hits. Huey and Wiercioch each batted in two runs on the day, while Huey capped her weekend with a team-high eight RBI.
Duke will return to action next weekend in Orlando, Fla., for the Citrus Classic. The Blue Devils open the weekend with a Friday, Feb. 23 doubleheader against Morgan State (3 p.m. ET) and Kentucky (5:30 p.m.) before facing Savannah State (10 a.m.) and Harvard (3 p.m.) on Saturday, Feb. 24. The weekend will wrap up with a Sunday, Feb. 25 showdown against Minnesota, set for an 11:30 a.m. first pitch.
