DURHAM, N.C. – For the second week in a row and the third time this season, Duke women’s tennis freshman Kelly Chen has been selected as ACC Co-Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon.
Chen shares her third ACC honor with Syracuse’s Sofya Golubovskaya. Chen won both her debut ACC singles and doubles matches in Duke’s 6-1 win over NC State on Sunday.
The Cerritos, Calif., native beat NC State’s Adriana Reami 6-3, 7-5 in singles to move to 1-0 in ACC play. It was her first win in the No. 2 position and gives her a 6-1 record in dual matches.
Chen also teamed with senior Samantha Harris to win her first conference doubles match. The duo beat Amanda Rebol and Reami 6-2 at position No. 2. That win clinched the doubles point for the Blue Devils and moved Chen and Harris’ doubles record to 3-3 in dual matches.
Chen is a team-best 19-7 on the season, including her 6-1 record in dual matches. She is 1-0 at position No. 2 and 5-1 at position No. 3. She is 5-6 against nationally ranked opponents. Chen and Harris have teamed to go 13-5 in doubles this season.
Chen and her Blue Devil teammates will play their first outdoor home match of the season Feb. 25 when Dartmouth comes to Durham. The match is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. in Ambler Tennis Stadium.
