ORLANDO, Fla. - A stellar day at the plate for Rachel Abboud, highlighted by her first-career home run, spearheaded a Saturday sweep for the Duke Blue Devils (9-4), as they defeated Savannah State (3-4) and Harvard (2-1) to close out their second day at the Citrus Classic.
The freshman first baseman finished with four hits and three RBI on the day, including the first bomb of her career and playing a role in bringing home the game-winning runs in both contests. A combined 19 hits and nine runs batted in on the day were key in Duke’s 5-1 victory against SSU and 5-0 shutout of the Crimson.
Abboud started off the day’s scoring with a two-RBI single to right field in the first inning of game one, bringing home both Reilly Metzger and Kortney Dry. After failing to break through the Blue Devil defense in the first three frames, a pair of hits and a passed ball in the fourth helped get Savannah State on the board, cutting Duke’s lead to 2-1.
The Blue Devils responded immediately in the home half of the inning, as a Brianna Butler leadoff double up the middle set up an RBI double for Dry, the first hit of her collegiate career. Duke tacked on its final two runs in the fifth as Abboud unloaded for her first-career home run and Amelia Wiercioch followed two batters later with a double to right center that would drive in pinch runner Makenna Lutterloh.
Butler earned the win, going 4.0 innings, striking out five and only allowing two hits and one run, which was unearned. Wiercioch pitched the final 3.0 innings, giving up only two hits and no runs while striking out three.
Duke wasted no time in getting started in their second game of the day, putting up two runs in the first inning against Harvard. Jameson Kavel led off with a single through the left side, followed by a steal of second and eventually pushed to third on a sac bunt by Jazmine Moreno. Abboud reached on a single and Raine Wilson was hit by pitch to load the bases. Butler capitalized on the moment and knocked a two-RBI single to left to bring home Kavel and Abboud, making it 2-0 early on for Duke.
The Blue Devil defense, led by game two starter Katherine Huey and reliever Peyton St. George, allowed only three hits in the first five innings, turning Harvard back every time the Crimson put a runner on the basepaths.
After she ripped a single up the middle, a fielding error in the sixth pushed Metzger across the plate to make it 3-0 Duke. An RBI double from St. George and RBI single from Dominique Salinas in the seventh rounded out the scoring for Duke, with St. George finishing off the Crimson to secure the 5-0 victory. Huey and St. George combined to shut out the Crimson, with Huey picking up her fourth win of the season.
