ORLANDO, Fla. - In their final game of the weekend at the Citrus Classic, the Duke Blue Devils (9-5) fell in an extra-innings battle to the 22nd-ranked Minnesota Gophers (10-4), 5-1, at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
After Katherine Huey and the Blue Devil defense shut down Minnesota in the first two frames, the Gophers finally broke through thanks to a defensive error that brought the game's first run home. However, that lead would not last long thanks to Jameson Kavel, who knocked a double to left center to score Dominique Salinas, tying things up at 1-1.
Duke nearly broke the tie in the sixth, getting a runner to second with one out. Minnesota was able to escape the jam unharmed to send the contest to the seventh at 1-1 thanks to a fly out and strikeout.
After both teams went down in order in the seventh, the contest moved to extras and the international tiebreaker, where Minnesota was able to plate four runs in the top half of the frame. Duke attempted to mount a comeback in its side of the frame, loading the bases with one out, but was unable to bring home any runs as Minnesota took the contest, 5-1.
Huey made the start for the Blue Devils, going the full 8.0 innings and striking out seven, two short of tying her career high. Kavel, Huey and Reilly Metzger each recorded a hit on the day, with Kavel extending her career-high reached safely streak to 10-straight games and Metzger pushing her career-high hitting streak to three straight.
The Blue Devils return to action Wednesday, Feb. 28 against South Carolina, with first pitch set for 6 p.m. ET. The contest will be broadcast on SEC Network +, which fans can access through WatchESPN.com and the ESPN app.
