LYNCHBURG, Va. – On the heels of impressive performances at last week’s ACC Championships, a trio of Blue Devil swimmers returned to action in strong fashion Saturday at the Liberty University Last Chance Invitational.
Junior Maddie Hess made a statement in the 100-yard backstroke, taking down her own school record of 52.89 set at ACCs. Hess turned in a 52.38 swim Saturday at Liberty to move into the top 30 in the national rankings in that event.
Sophomore Kylie Jordan also improved upon her times from last week’s conference championships, going 52.03 in the 100 butterfly preliminaries to shave .58 off her previous career best. Jordan added a 1:58.34 performance in the 200 butterfly.
Distance specialist Verity Abel made it three-for-three on best times for the Blue Devils, clocking 16:04.66 in the 1,650 freestyle. That shattered her previous career-best clocking of 16:17.08, which Abel recorded last week in Greensboro. The new mile time ranks Abel among the top 20 swimmers in the country in the event.
In addition, Abel split 9:48.95 at the 1,000-yard mark in her mile swim for another career-best time.
Entry lists for the 2018 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships will be released Tuesday, with the official meet psych sheet due out Wednesday.
