Blue Devils Jump Four Spots at Darius Rucker

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Saturday was moving day for the fifth-ranked Duke women’s golf team as the Blue Devils jumped four spots at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, which is being played at the 6,160-yard, par 71 Pete Dye Course at the Long Cove Club.

The Blue Devils had one of the best ledgers going for most of the day, which vaulted Duke into third place, but the squad dropped seven strokes over the final three holes to end Saturday in sixth. Duke has carded rounds of 295 and 296 for a 23-over-par, 591. The team scores were higher in the second round due to windy, gusty conditions.

Alabama continues to hold the team lead with a nine-over, 577, with Northwestern (583), Arkansas (586), Furman (589), Wake Forest (590), Duke (591), LSU (593), Vanderbilt (595), Georgia (597) and South Carolina (598) rounding out the top 10 teams.

Freshman Miranda Wang carded Duke’s best round of the day as she turned in a two-over, 73, and currently sits tied 27th overall with a seven-over, 149. Wang, who hails from Beijing, China, was two-over-par on the first nine holes, but played her final 11 holes at even par. She rolled in three birdies on the day, all of which were within five feet. She hit 12 fairways, 12 greens and had 30 putts.

Both Jaravee Boonchant and Leona Maguire enter the final day of action tied 14th overall with a four-over, 146. Boonchant turned in three birdies and three bogeys during her round, but two double-bogeys on No. 2 and No. 11 proved to be the difference in her day as she finished with a 75. A product of Bangkok, Thailand, Boonchant featured three birdies, including a chip-in on the 364-yard, par four 14th from 16 yards with her 56-degree wedge.

Maguire, who is from Cavan, Ireland, opened her day with a birdie on the 384-yard, par four 10th with a birdie, but she was held without another the rest of the day. She had bogeys on No. 12, No. 13 and No. 17, before playing the final 10 holes at one-over-par with a bogey on No. 9. Maguire hit 13 fairways, 13 greens and had 33 putts as she finished with a 74.

Senior Lisa Maguire had a one-over ledger through 15 holes Saturday, but bogeys on each of her final three holes led her to signing for a 75. She enters the final day tied 38th with a 151. Maguire, a native of Cavan, Ireland, also birdied the first hole, but went on to bogey three out of the next four holes to fall to two-over-par. Over the next 10 holes, Maguire held a one-under score with a birdie on the 504-yard, par five third. She hit 11 fairways, six greens and had a team-best 27 putts.

After two pars to kick off her day, sophomore Ana Belac went through a tough stretch where she had two bogeys, a par, birdie and double-bogey. She would head to hole No. 17 with a three-over score. Belac, who is from Portoroz, Slovenia, would regroup and close her final 11 holes at even par. She had birdies on No. 4 from 10 feet and No. 6 from five feet. Belac hit 15 greens, 13 fairways and rolled 37 putts Saturday.

Duke will tee off Sunday beginning at 8:50 a.m. off hole No. 1 along with Furman and Wake Forest.
