KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – A pair of Blue Devils secured return trips to the NCAA Championships with their performances in men’s one-meter diving Tuesday at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships. Junior Evan Moretti and sophomore Nathaniel Hernandez both punched their tickets to the national meet later this month in Minneapolis.

Moretti earned his third consecutive trip to NCAAs and Hernandez his second with top-six finishes on the one-meter springboard.

An honorable mention All-American on the three-meter board as a freshman, Moretti was third in Tuesday’s event final with a combined score of 709.75 points on 12 dives. The Scarsdale, N.Y., native totaled 361.75 points in the final round, topping the 60-point mark on four of his six dives. The fifth round saw Moretti garner an award of 66.65 points on an inward 2.5 somersault for a 3.1 degree of difficulty.

Moretti is also eligible to compete on the three-meter board at NCAAs by virtue of his third-place showing Tuesday and a top-12 finish on the three-meter board Monday in Knoxville.

Hernandez locked up the sixth and final qualification spot in the one-meter event with 672.10 total points. He earned 327.10 points in preliminaries and 345.00 in finals, rounding out his finals list with 60.45 points on an inward 2.5 somersault.

A day after placing seventh on the three-meter board, freshman Teddy Zeng was back in finals Tuesday, coming in 12th overall (631.50). Junior Josh Owsiany was 22nd in preliminaries (264.35).

Junior Mackenzie Willborn led the Blue Devil women for the second-straight day, placing ninth on the three-meter springboard with 599.40 total points. She earned 306.00 points in the event final, topping the 50-point mark three times – including on a reverse 2.5 somersault in the second round that received an award of 58.80 from the judges.

Junior Lizzie Fitzpatrick also represented Duke in finals for the second consecutive day, finishing 16th at 565.35 points. Sophomore Jaina Gaudette was 25th in preliminaries (255.25).

The NCAA Zone B Championships wrap up Wednesday with the men’s and women’s platform competitions. Men’s platform preliminaries begin at 10 a.m., followed by finals at 11:55 p.m., women’s preliminaries at 2:45 p.m. and women’s finals at 4:15 p.m.
