DURHAM, N.C. – For the second time in as many weeks, the Duke Blue Devils will be represented on a United States Women’s National Team, as Kayla McCoy and Ella Stevens were named to the U-23 squad for the 2018 Thorns Spring Invitational.
McCoy and Stevens join Brooke Heinsohn as the three Blue Devils to be called up in the previous two weeks, as Heinsohn joined the U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team from Feb. 23 – March 7 for an extended training camp and to play in two matches in France.
The 24-member squad will head to Portland, Ore., for the 2018 Thorns Spring Invitational, which will see the USA taking on three NWSL teams between March 11-17 at Merlo Field on the campus of the University of Portland. The round-robin competition will consist of three match days, with an early game that has free admission and then a later match featuring the Thorns that will be a ticketed event.
The USA opens against the Houston Dash on Sunday, March 11 at 2:30 p.m. ET before taking on Portland Thorns FC Wednesday, March 14 at 10:30 p.m. Play concludes for the USA Saturday, March 17 against the Chicago Red Stars at 4:30 p.m. A 2017 All-ACC First Team honoree and United Soccer Coaches Second Team Scholar All-American, McCoy most recently trained with the U.S. U-19 National Team in January of 2016. She has also spent time with the U-20, U-18 and U-15 squads in her career.
Stevens, who earned All-ACC Second Team honors this past season, last played with the U.S. National Team in 2016, as she joined the U-19 squad for three contests in Auckland, New Zealand, tallying two goals and an assist. She has also spent time with the U-20 and U-17 teams, including helping lead the former to the 2015 CONCACAF Championship in Honduras.
