DURHAM, N.C. – Seven Blue Devils have earned invitations to the 2018 NCAA Fencing Championships March 22-25 in State College, Pa., as announced Tuesday by the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Fencing Committee.

The championship will be hosted by Penn State at the Multi-Sport Facility.

The Duke fencers set to compete are Bryn Hammarberg (epee), Eoin Gronningsater (foil), Brycen Rushing (foil), Pascual Di Tella (saber), Agoston Walter (saber), Julia Gianneschi (foil) and Rhiannon Harvey (foil).

This year marks the fourth trip to NCAAs for Di Tella, third for Hammarberg and second for Gronningsater. Gianneschi, Rushing, Walter and Harvey will be making their first appearances.

Hammarberg headlined the 2017 NCAA Championships as he garnered All-America honors with a 10th-place finish in Indianapolis, Ind. Gronningsater placed just shy of All-America status in 13th as a rookie while Di Tella captured All-America recognition as a freshman with a fifth-place finish.

Last weekend at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional meet, Di Tella and Rushing earned spots on the podium with second-place finishes in their respective weapons. Harvey (5th), Hammarberg (6th), Gianneschi (8th) and Walter (9th) rounded out the top-10 performances in Pennsylvania.

Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After the round-robin, the top-four finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with the winners fencing to determine first and second places, and the non-advancing fencers being awarded a tie for third place.

An institution’s place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes for the duration of the championships.
