CHARLESTON, S.C. - Led by a dominant performance at the plate from Raine Wilson, the Duke Blue Devils (13-10) split a doubleheader at the College of Charleston (16-9) Wednesday night at the Patriots Point Athletic Complex.
The Blue Devils used a run in the second, third and fourth innings, along with a two-run seventh to secure a 5-1 victory in game one of the day. After falling down 6-0 after two innings in game two, Duke mounted a rally to tie things up in the sixth and take a two-run lead in the top of the seventh. However, the Cougars were able to plate three in the home half for the walk-off victory to cap the night.
Wilson led the way for the Blue Devils, finishing the day a combined 5-for-8 with four RBI, three runs and a double, triple and her third home run of the season. She accounted for one of three Blue Devil homers on the day, as Jill Ferraro and Amelia Wiercioch each blasted solo shots in game one.
Game one started off with a scoreless first before Duke plated the day's first run in the second. After Wiercioch led things off with a double to left, a sac bunt from Haley Wymbs would move her to third. An infield single from Dominique Salinas pushed her across home, making it 1-0 for the Blue Devils.
Wilson started off the third with her first-career triple, eventually coming home on an RBI single from Wiercioch to make it a 2-0 advantage. An RBI double from Jameson Kavel in the fourth pushed Reilly Metzger home to put the Blue Devils ahead 3-0.
Back-to-back singles and a Blue Devil error gave Charleston its first run of the contest, but that would be all for the home team in game one. Ferraro sent an 0-1 pitch over the wall in left center in the seventh to push the Duke lead to 4-1, with Wiercioch's bomb to center coming two batters later. Wiercioch, who drew the start, worked around a two-out single in the seventh to close out the first contest and secure the 5-1 victory for Duke.
Wiercioch (4-3) threw her third complete game of the season, allowing just the one run and tying her season high with six strikeouts.
Eight Blue Devils recorded a hit, with Wiercioch going 3-for-4 with two RBI, two runs, a double and a home run and Wilson going 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored.
Game two started out in favor of the home team, as Charleston scored two in the first and four in the second to jump ahead 6-0 early. That would not deter the Blue Devils, as they began chipping away at the lead in the third with a Wilson RBI double to left, scoring Kavel.
Duke got three runs back in the fifth, as Wiercioch drove home Wilson, followed by a double from Peyton St. George that scored Ferraro. A bases-loaded walk issued to Salinas pushed across the fourth run of the contest for the Blue Devils, cutting Charleston's lead to 6-4.
It only took one swing of the bat in the sixth to complete the comeback and tie things up, as Wilson blasted a two-run shot to left center to make it 6-6. An inning later, the Blue Devils jumped in front thanks to RBI singles from Kavel and Wilson.
However, the Cougars were able to rally in the home half of the seventh, using a passed ball to help push home two runs and tie things up at 8-8. An RBI single to center dealt the final blow, as Charleston earned the walk-off win, 9-8.
Duke's eight runs tied the program mark for runs scored in a single game, while it set single-game program records in hits (13) and RBI (8).
For the second-straight game, eight Blue Devils recorded a hit, with four tallying multi-hit performances. Wilson paced Duke with a 3-for-4 showing with four runs batted in, while Rachel Abboud, Ferraro and St. George each turned in two hits on the night. Brianna Butler earned the start for the Blue Devils, going 1.2 innings before giving way to St. George (1-2), who threw 4.2 innings and struck out three, only giving up one earned run.
Duke returns to action this weekend at home, as the Blue Devils host Boston College for their first home ACC series in program history. First pitch in the series is Friday, March 16 at 5 p.m. ET, with both Saturday and Sunday set to start at 1 p.m. All three contests will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
