BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Four Blue Devil pitchers – Bryce Jarvis, Graeme Stinson, Ethan DeCaster and Jack Labosky -- combined to shut out Campbell, leading Duke to a 4-0 victory Tuesday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.
Making his second straight Tuesday start, freshman Bryce Jarvis again twirled three scoreless innings to begin the ballgame. Jarvis struck out four, allowed one base hit and walked one before turning the game over to the bullpen in a planned split.
Left-hander Graeme Stinson took over in the fourth and proceeded to strike out nine of the 10 batters he faced, all swinging. Luis Gimenez was the only Camel to reach base against Stinson, dribbling an infield single to the left side.
Campbell’s Allan Winans pitched five shutout frames before Duke broke through in the sixth. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with Blue Devils. On a Max Miller fielder’s choice, Camel shortstop Luis Gimenez’ throw sailed into the right field grass, allowing Jimmy Herron to score. Freshman Joey Loperfido then drove the first pitch he saw into centerfield for a two-run single.
Loperfido’s sixth-inning base knock was one of two hits for the Blue Devil rookie, who raised his team-leading average to .348. Herron also had two hits to go along with a walk, reaching base in three of his five plate appearances.
After two scoreless innings from Ethan DeCaster to preserve the 3-0 lead, Duke added an insurance run in the ninth. Chris Proctor walked, reached third on a failed pickoff throw down the right field line, and scored on Jack Labosky’s sacrifice fly to deep center.
Labosky then took the mound in the ninth and faced the minimum to keep the shutout intact.
Next up, the Blue Devils return to the Durham Bulls Athletic Park at 4 p.m., Wednesday, March 21 to host Maryland Eastern Shore on ACC Network Extra.
