WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 1 Wake Forest men’s tennis team proved too much for No. 18 Duke as the Demon Deacons came away with a 6-1 victory Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Devils tallied their point from freshman Sean Sculley with a straight-sets victory on court five.
Duke dropped an extremely tight doubles point as the Demon Deacons used two late breaks to secure wins on courts three and one. On three, Alan Gadjiev and Borna Gojo slipped past juniors Jason Lapidus and Ryan Dickerson, 6-4. The two sides were tied at 1-1, 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4 before Wake Forest tallied a break and hold to end the match. Lapidus and Dickerson fall to 7-5 overall, all in dual matches, and 1-1 versus ACC competition.
Court one played out in similar fashion with Bar Botzer and Petros Chrysochos claiming a 7-5 victory against Sculley and sophomore Nick Stachowiak. After a tie at each of the first five games, the Demon Deacons broke and held to secure the doubles point. Sculley and Stachowiak dip to 10-10 overall, 5-8 in dual action and 0-2 in league matches.
Once in singles, Gojo, ranked No. 29, made it a 2-0 lead for Wake Forest with a 6-1, 6-0 victory against No. 17 Nicolas Alvarez on court one. Duke’s redshirt junior is now 11-4 overall, 6-2 in dual competition and 2-2 in league matches.
The Demon Deacons made it a 3-0 advantage on court two, where No. 7 Chrysochos defeated No. 113 Catalin Mateas, 6-1, 6-2. Mateas, a junior, regrouped at the start of the second set and was even at 1-1 and 2-2 before Chrysochos ran through the final four games. The loss snaps a 10-match regular season ACC winning streak for Mateas and drops him to 10-8 overall, 5-5 in dual matches and 3-1 versus ACC foes.
Wake Forest clinched the match on court four with Julian Zlobinsky downing sophomore Robert Levine 6-3, 6-0. Levine was tied at 1-1, 2-2 and 3-3 in the opening set before Zlobinsky captured the final nine games of the match. Levine drops to 8-7 overall and 5-6 in dual matches and 1-1 versus league competition.
Duke got its point on court five with Sculley rolling past Botzer, 6-1, 6-1. Sculley opened the match with a 5-0 lead in the opening set and turned a 2-1 second set into the match. Sculley improves to 14-10 overall, 6-7 in dual matches and 2-1 in ACC play.
The Demon Deacons’ fifth point came from No. 30 Skander Mansouri, who downed Stachowiak 6-4, 6-4 on court three. Stachowiak jumped ahead to a 2-0 lead in the opening set, but Mansouri rebounded with four consecutive games to go up 4-2. Stachowiak cut the gap to one at 4-3 and 5-4, but could not force the tie. In the second set, the two were even at one, two and three games each before Mansouri turned a 3-3 deadlock into a 5-3 lead with a break and hold. Stachowiak held to make it 5-4, but Mansouri served out for the win. Stachowiak slips to 22-7 overall, 11-4 in dual matches and 3-1 in ACC matches.
Gadjiev finished the match for Wake Forest with a 6-2, 7-5 victory against Dickerson on court six. The first set had Dickerson trail 5-0 before a hold and break got him down 5-2. Gadjiev broke back for the set. In the second set, it was Dickerson with the early lead, turning a 1-1 tie into a 3-1 advantage. Gadjiev rallied with four of the next five games to go ahead 5-4, but Dickerson held to knot the set at 5-5. Gadjiev had the final response, holding and breaking for the victory. Dickerson falls to 15-11 overall, 8-8 in dual action and 2-2 in league play.
Duke next heads to Weymouth, Mass., to take on Boston College for a 12 noon Sunday match.
