DURHAM, N.C. – For the fifth time this season, Duke women’s tennis freshman Kelly Chen has been chosen as the ACC Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Chen helped Duke to a pair of home wins last week, beating Notre Dame 7-0 and No. 19 Miami 6-1. She won a pair of singles matches and combined with Samantha Harris to win two doubles matches.
Chen opened the weekend with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Notre Dame’s Zoe Spence. She followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Miami’s Daniella Roldan.
In doubles, Chen and Harris beat Notre Dame’s Allison Miller and Brooke Broda 6-1, followed by dropping Miami’s Dominika Paterova and Ulyana Shirokova 6-3.
The Cerritos, Calif., product leads the Blue Devils with a 26-7 singles record, including a 13-1 dual match record and a 6-0 ACC mark. She has won eight straight matches and is 9-1 in her last 10. On the doubles court, Chen has teamed with Harris to notch an 18-5 record this season, including a team-best 6-2 against nationally ranked tandems.
Chen has now won half of the ACC’s ten Freshman of the Week honors. She also won on Jan. 23, Feb. 13, Feb. 20 and March 6. No one else has garnered more than two such awards.
Duke will play a pair of home matches this week, hosting Florida State at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday and Louisville at 12:00 noon on Saturday.
