CONWAY, S.C. - Despite a late rally, the Duke Blue Devils (19-18) were unable to break through the Coastal Carolina Chanticleer (18-20) defense Wednesday night, falling in a 3-1 decision at Charles Wade-John Lott Field.

Coastal used a two-run home run in the first to jump out in front early on and never looked back. CCU added an insurance run in the third off a wild pitch with a runner 60 feet away to make the score 3-0.

Amelia Wiercioch, who entered the contest in relief in the third, kept the Chanticleers in check for the final three frames by retiring the final nine batters faced. Wiercioch's dominance in the circle help set up a Duke rally in the seventh, as Jameson Kavel tallied her team-leading fifth triple of the year to get things going. A grounder from Rachel Abboud would push her home to cut the lead down to 3-1. A Raine Wilson double kept the rally going until Coastal induced a Duke fly out to center to seal the win.

Abboud led the way for the Blue Devil offense with a 2-for-3 day at the plate with a double and a walk for her team-leading 12th multi-hit game of the year. Haley Wymbs also picked up a pair of hits, going 2-for-3. Kavel's triple, Wilson's double and a base hit from Jazmine Moreno rounded out the Blue Devils' seven-hit night. Brianna Butler (1-2) earned the start for Duke, going 2.0 innings and striking out one. Wiercioch's relief effort went 4.0 innings where she only allowed one hit and struck out one.

With its four-game road trip in the books, the Blue Devils return home for its fifth weekend of ACC play as they host Georgia Tech at the Duke Softball Stadium. The series begins Friday, April 6 with a 5 p.m. ET first pitch. Both Saturday and Sunday feature 1 p.m. first pitches to wrap up the series. All three contests will be live streamed on ACC Network Extra, which fans can access through WatchESPN.com or the ESPN app.

Extra Bases…

  • Wednesday's game was the sixth against an opponent from the state of South Carolina, the most of any state in program history to date. Duke is 2-4 in those contests.
  • Rachel Abboud went 2-for-3 to record her team-leading 12th multi-hit game of the season.
  • Abboud also upped her career-high hitting streak to five-straight games.
  • With her triple in the seventh, Jameson Kavel now has a team-high five on the season which ties for the most amongst ACC players.
  • Haley Wymbs also turned in a multi-hit showing, going 2-for-3 to tally her third such contest of the year.
  • With her double, Raine Wilson has now hit safely in four-straight games, one away from tying her career high.
