CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A two-run sixth tied things up and an RBI single in the ninth delivered a 3-2 walk-off win in extras for the Charlotte 49ers (12-26) Tuesday afternoon against the Duke Blue Devils (20-21) at Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium.

The Blue Devils held a 2-0 lead heading into the final two innings before Charlotte began its rally, using a pair of extra-base hits to tie the contest. After scoreless frames on both sides in the seventh and eighth, an RBI single through the right side with runners at first and second delivered the win for the home team in the ninth.

Katherine Huey earned the start for the Blue Devils and kept the 49ers in check for a majority of the contest. Huey would sit Charlotte down in order in the second, setting up the Blue Devils’ two-run third.

Dominique Salinas showcased her speed to get things going, tallying an infield single on a grounder to the shortstop. A Charlotte fielding error allowed Rachel Abboud to reach base safely as Salinas once again turned on the jets and made her way to third on the 49ers’ miscue. After a rundown that ended in Abboud being tagged out between second and third, Raine Wilson put the ball in play towards the second baseman and beat the throw at first, driving home Salinas. Kortney Dry would also come home, beating the throw at the plate to put Duke up 2-0.

Each side was able to lead off with a single in the fourth, but would be shut down by the opposing defenses. Highlighting the inning was a 6-3 double play for the Blue Devils, as Jameson Kavel fielded the grounder, tagged second and fired to first to send the game into the fifth with a 2-0 Duke lead.

Charlotte made its first real noise in the fifth with back-to-back two-out singles before Huey forced a groundout to first to end the frame. A second-straight 1-2-3 inning set up Charlotte’s two-run sixth that would tie the game.

Duke put the go-ahead run 60 feet from home in both the seventh and ninth, but could not capitalize, giving way to Charlotte’s 3-2 walk-off win.

Haley Wymbs and Wilson led the Blue Devils at the plate, with Wymbs going 2-for-4 to record her fifth multi-hit game of the year. Wilson picked up a single hit, but played a major role in Duke’s two runs in the contest coming home. Huey, Salinas and Hannah Pridemore also recorded hits on the day.

Huey went 6.0 innings in the start, striking out three while giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits and one walk. Amelia Wiercioch (6-8) closed out the contest for the Blue Devils with 2.1 innings of work, striking out two while giving up one run on three hits.

The Blue Devils make a quick turnaround for their next contest, as they host the Elon Phoenix (20-18) Wednesday, April 11 at the Duke Softball Stadium. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra, which can be accessed through WatchESPN.com or the ESPN app.
