ATHENS, Ga. – The Duke University women’s golf duo of senior Leona Maguire and freshman Jaravee Boonchant each shot back-to-back rounds of under par to pace the fourth-ranked Blue Devils on the first day of action Friday at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga.

Due to potential severe weather expected for Sunday, the teams played 36 holes Friday with Duke carding scores of 292 and 288 for a four-over, 580, which is third overall behind Alabama (562) and Arkansas (574). Host Georgia (585) and Baylor (588) rounded out the top five schools at the 6,300-yard, par 72 University of Georgia Golf Course.

The Blue Devils opened with a sluggish start Friday morning with a six-over score as four of the five golfers in the lineup had a bogey or double-bogey on their first hole.

Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, signed for rounds of 70 and 69 for a five-under-par, 139, to rank tied second overall and three shots off the lead. Alabama’s Cheyenne Knight collected an eight-under, 136, and leads the individual race.

With Maguire’s two rounds of under par, she now owns 79 for her Blue Devil career, which breaks Duke three-time National Player of the Year Amanda Blumenherst’s all-time mark of 78. It is more than any golfer in NCAA history.

In round one, Maguire turned in a two-under, 70, as she notched five birdies in the morning. She hit a season-low nine fairways and rolled 28 putts. Maguire responded with a tied for the low second round score of the afternoon with a three-under, 69. She opened action on hole 13 and had three consecutive pars, before suffering her only bogey of the second round. Maguire would end up closing the day with a four-under ledger over her final 14 holes as she registered birdies on No. 4, No. 6, No. 9 and No. 11. She hit 14 fairways, 15 greens and had 30 putts.

Boonchant turned in back-to-back rounds of 70 for a four-under, 140, Friday and is tied fifth overall. After opening her day on No. 14 with a bogey, she was four-under through the next 14 holes. It included two birdies and her second collegiate eagle on the par five ninth. A product of Bangkok, Thailand, Boonchant opened her second round with a par, par and birdie, but then suffered two bogeys over the next three holes to drop to one-over. She then had a birdie on No. 3, eagle on the par four No. 4 and birdie on No. 7 to move to three-under for the afternoon. Boonchant closed with five pars and one bogey on No. 10. She now owns a tied for team-best three eagles on the year.

Making her spring debut for the Blue Devils, junior Virginia Elena Carta collected rounds of 77 and 72 Friday and is tied 27th overall with a five-over, 149. She notched four birdies and only seven pars in the first round. Carta, who hails from Udine, Italy, came back and signed for an even-par, 72, in the second round, which featured three birdies and three bogeys to go along with 12 pars. After dealing with injury and illness this spring, Carta turned in her seventh round of even or under par on the year.

Ana Belac featured Duke’s best start to the day, after suffering a bogey on her opening hole No. 14 as she notched three straight birdies on holes No. 16-18. With a score of two-under through five holes, Belac went to the front nine and had four tough holes where she combined for six-over-par to drop to four-over for the day. The Portoroz, Slovenia product closed strong with a one-under ledger over her final five holes with a birdie on No. 10. Belac hit 12 greens, 12 fairways and had 32 putts in round one as she finished with a 75. In the second round, Belac was limited to one birdie and posted a 79. She had a season-high 38 putts, while hitting 13 greens and 11 fairways.

Senior Lisa Maguire was four-over-par in her first four holes of the day, but closed with 12 pars over her final 14 holes to finish with an 80. Maguire, who is from Cavan, Ireland, had 12 pars in her second round and had a 77. Making her second collegiate appearance, freshman Hannah O’Sullivan had two consecutive rounds of 85 and is 69th. She is playing as an individual for the Blue Devils.

Duke will tee off Saturday in the final round beginning at 9:33 a.m., along with Alabama and Arkansas.
