DURHAM, N.C. – Redshirt junior Nicolas Alvarez has been selected to represent Duke at the 2018 NCAA Singles Championship from May 23-28 at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, N.C., according to an announcement by the NCAA on Wednesday.
Alvarez received an at-large bid to compete in the 64-player singles field. It is his third career selection, becoming just the eighth Blue Devil to attend the NCAA’s prime event three times and first since Henrique Cunha from 2010-13. Duke has had at least one player selected to compete in the NCAA Singles Championships in 10 of the last 11 seasons.
The Lima, Peru, product served as the Blue Devils’ top singles player this season, playing each of his dual matches on court one. He sports a 14-8 overall record and leads Duke with seven wins against ranked opponents. Alvarez’s most noteworthy victory of the campaign was an upset of the nation’s No. 1 player with a 6-3, 6-4 win of North Carolina’s William Blumberg on March 9. Alvarez was named the ACC Player of the Week following the performance. He has been among the top 26 in the Oracle/ITA rankings since early March and topped out at No. 11 for the week of April 17.
Action at the NCAA Singles Championship begins Wednesday, May 23, with the first round starting at 9 a.m. All matches will be the best-of-three sets. No-ad scoring and a seven-point tiebreaker at six-games-all will be used.
