FARMVILLE, Va. – A late rally in game one and a three-run fourth in game two helped propel the Longwood Lancers (37-14) Saturday afternoon, as the Duke Blue Devils (29-25) dropped a Saturday doubleheader in Farmville to wrap up road play in their inaugural regular season.

The day’s first game provided 13 combined runs and went nine innings, with Longwood taking a 7-6 walk-off win. Game two was a pitcher’s duel until the fourth inning, when Longwood scored three runs to go on to a 3-1 victory.

Both sides got the scoring started early in game one, with Duke striking first thanks to an RBI single from Amelia Wiercioch that drove home Haley Wymbs to go ahead 1-0. However, Longwood answered in the home half of the frame, tying things up at 1-1 thanks to an RBI single to left.

The Lancers tacked on a run in the second and another in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead heading into the final two innings. The Blue Devils would begin their rally in the sixth, as a single to right from Katherine Huey pushed Makenna Lutterloh across home plate to cut Longwood’s lead down to one at 3-2.

Longwood looked poised to stop the rally there, taking out the first two Duke batters in the seventh. Wymbs kept the inning alive with a single to center, setting up a two-run homer from Raine Wilson that would vault the Blue Devils into the lead, 4-3. Then with two outs on the board and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, a Duke fielding error allowed the tying run to score before they threw the winning run out at the plate, sending the game into extras at 4-4.

After a quiet eighth inning on both sides, Duke jumped out in front in the ninth, as Wilson and Wiercioch drove in runs to give the Blue Devils a 6-4 advantage. Back-to-back singles would lead off Longwood’s time at the plate, before Duke put two outs on the board. A fielding error allowed Longwood to load the bases, giving way to a three-RBI double that sealed Longwood’s 7-6 walk-off win in the first contest of the day.

The day’s second game did not provide as much action as its predecessor, delivering scoreless innings on both sides before Longwood broke through for three runs in the fourth. Duke would get one back in the seventh, as Jill Ferraro would reach on a leadoff single and eventually come home on an infield single from Huey to cut Longwood’s lead to 3-1. However, back-to-back fielder’s choices would halt Duke’s comeback attempt and give the Lancers a 3-1 victory to close out the day.

Three Blue Devils turned in multi-hit showings in the day’s first game, led by three-hit days from Wilson and Wiercioch, while Rachel Abboud recorded two hits. Wilson also drove in three runs, while Wiercioch pushed two across home plate. With the trio of hits and runs batted in, Wilson’s team-high totals for multi-hit games moved to 19, while upping her multi-RBI game total to nine.

Ferraro was the team leader in the second game, going 2-for-2 and scoring the Blue Devils’ lone run of the contest.

The Blue Devils will close out the weekend and the 2018 regular season Sunday, May 6 against Campbell. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m. ET at the Duke Softball Stadium and will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra, which fans can access through or the ESPN app.
