DURHAM, N.C.-- What's up Duke fam! Haley here to give a little update on how the summer is going. Before returning to campus, I was able to go home for a week or so and it was awesome. I got so see my family and friends and spent time with them.
In Chicago, we never know what to expect from the weather, but I got pretty lucky with some warm, sunny days. I am a huge family person so being able to go home for even a little makes me super happy.
It wasn’t long until I returned to campus and started getting that work in! The season can’t come soon enough for me! The day I can step foot on the Cameron Indoor Stadium floor again and play with my sisters is something that is in the back of my mind 24/7. This is our year!
Mikayla Boykin, Kyra Lambert, and I got to campus around two weeks ago and from day one have been working out and getting our rehab in. We call ourselves the #YOTPG (can’t tell you what that means yet, but soon enough), and also #comebackchronicles.
Summer McKeehan and Jordan Busse, our trainers, have been helping us to get a little better each day. (They are great, not sure how they put up with our shenanigans all the time). The coaches have been working with us too: Coach Jim Corrigan, Sam Miller and Rene Haynes along with Ashleigh Beaver have been finding some pretty difficult workouts. It has been tiring, but after being out for so long again there are no complaints.
I have been loving it all - going to the gym on my own, getting workouts in with the coaches, and being in the weight room makes me so happy and excited!
A typical day for me right now is get up around 8:40 a.m., and head to the gym for a basketball workout with the coaches. We have been working on so much for the upcoming season. I am still a little limited on what I can do just because of my surgery, but soon enough I will be back in full action!
After my basketball workout, I have my rehab with Jordan starting at 11 a.m. In rehab, we do a lot of things to help my hip and make me stronger all around. As of right now, I am using a machine called the “Alter G” which is basically a treadmill, but allows me to only use a little bit amount of my body weight so I don’t put so much pressure on my body. For the most part it's like running on a regular treadmill.
From that machine, I go to the regular treadmill for a little and then we do a bunch of other exercises to get me back in shape. Like I said before, Jordan and Summer have been great and they are focused on making me better. After treatment, I go to lift with Madison Treece, Kyra and Mikayla. And let me tell you, Ashleigh is getting us right! She personalizes each of our workouts to what we need to work on and what we can do.
Other than workouts we are all just hanging around, none of us are taking a class right now except for Madison, so we have a lot of time to work on what we need to which is really nice. The weather has been beautiful, so you already know that you can find me by the water in the sun whenever I have some free time.
