DURHAM, N.C. – Duke redshirt junior quarterback Daniel Jones has been named to the preseason Davey O’Brien Award Watch List. The honor is presented annually to the nation’s top quarterback by the Davey O’Brien Foundation. The selection marks Jones’ second consecutive year on the preseason watch list.
Jones has already been named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, presented to the college player of the year by the Maxwell Football Club. He has also earned a spot on Phil Steele’s College Football Preview’s preseason All-ACC third team.
A 6-5, 220-pound Charlotte, N.C., product, Jones completed 257-of-453 (.567) passes for 2,691 yards with 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last fall. He also rushed 161 times for 518 yards (3.22) and seven scores. In 25 career games (25 starts), he has completed 527-of-883 (.597) passes for 5,527 yards with 30 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. He owns a career pass efficiency rating of 118.94. On the ground, Jones has rushed 302 times for 1,004 yards (3.32) and 14 touchdowns. He has compiled 6,531 yards of total offense.
He enters the 2018 season ranking third among active players in the ACC in passing yards, third in total offensive yards, third in passing touchdowns, tied for third in touchdowns scored by a quarterback, tied for third in rushing touchdowns by a quarterback, fourth in total offensive yards per game (261.24), fifth in passing yards per game (221.08), sixth in passing yards, sixth in rushing attempts, tied for sixth in rushing touchdowns, tied for seventh in overall touchdowns and 14th in rushing yards.
The 2017 Quick Lane Bowl MVP, Jones was also last fall’s recipient of Duke’s Ace Parker Award, an honor presented annually to an individual who displays unparalleled commitment to the team and overcomes adversity to contribute.
The Davey O’Brien Award honors candidates who exemplify Davey O’Brien’s enduring character while exhibiting teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership in both academics and athletics. The award is overseen by the Davey O’Brien Foundation, which is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, and has given away more than $1 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.
