FORT WORTH, Texas – Rising sophomore Kelly Chen advanced to the singles main draw of the Fort Worth Tennis Classic Tuesday afternoon in Fort Worth, Texas, at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center at Texas Christian University.

Chen, a product of Cerritos, Calif., moved on to the main draw after besting three opponents in the qualifying rounds. In round one, ninth-seeded Chen defeated Rosalyn Small (6-0, 6-0) before going on to take down Kailey Evans (6-0, 6-3) in the second round. In Tuesday’s action, Chen came back against No. 6 Safiya Carrington (6-7 [7], 6-2, 6-1).

Chen will face Lauren Proctor in the first round of the singles main draw Wednesday afternoon.

Also competing in Texas this week is incoming freshman Maria Mateas. Mateas, who entered as the No. 4 seed, defeated Chieh-Yu Hsu (7-5, 7-6 [6]) in the first round of the singles main draw. Mateas will face Lorraine Guillermo in the second round.
