DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke senior men's basketball player Brennan Besser has completed a 3,500-mile bike trip from Seattle to New York City as he looks to raise $1 million for Walk On America.

Besser founded the Walk On America campaign to raise money and awareness of the Intellectual and Developmental Disability (IDD) community. Siblings Brennan and Rachel Besser were compelled to action by the challenges faced every day by their sister Jacqueline, who is non-verbal.

“I tip my hat to him,” said assistant coach Chris Carrawell. “It’s a selfless act – that’s what our program was built on. At Duke, we play for the name on the front. In this situation he did that, but also played for a bigger cause and the name on the back.”

Nearly $350,000 has been raised thus far as Besser rolled into New York City last week to complete his 3,553-mile, 64-day trek. He stopped at nearly 50 cities, meeting fans and conducting basketball clinics, as be battled the elements over his two-month adventure from coast to coast.

“What a crazy two months,” said Besser. “We connected with a lot of unbelievable people, but we still have a lot more work to do. My goal is to finish raising this $1 million and do even more work with the Walk On America foundation and make it bigger, and finish out my last year at Duke.”
