Mateas checks in at No. 73 in the singles ledger while Stachowiak is No. 87. The pair is No. 46 in the doubles rankings.
A native of Braintree, Mass., Mateas finished the 2017-18 campaign with a 12-15 singles record, 7-12 dual match mark and 4-6 ledger in ACC contests. He put together a 10-match ACC regular season winning streak dating back to the 2017 campaign, the sixth longest run in program history. Mateas also led the Blue Devils with four matches clinched. He ended the year ranked No. 118 in the Oracle/ITA poll after reaching a high of No. 92 in the singles rankings during late February and early March.
Last spring, Stachowiak repeated as the squad’s Charles Hamilton Hargrave Most Valuable Player, becoming the first two-time recipient in program history. He earned his first career All-ACC honor, picking up third team accolades. For the second consecutive campaign, he led the Blue Devils in singles victories, finishing the year with a 25-12 mark. Stachowiak was named the February 27 ACC Co-Player of the Week after winning both singles matches in straight sets on court two. The Cary, N.C., product defeated Florida State’s Guy Iradukunda, ranked No. 31, 7-5, 7-5 on April 22, 2018, after facing late deficits in both sets for the highest-ranked win of his career.
Mateas and Stachowiak will pair together as a doubles duo for the first time this season. In doubles in 2017, Mateas teamed with Nicolas Alvarez to form Duke’s No. 1 tandem for the latter half of the campaign. Alvarez and Mateas became the first Duke duo to win six consecutive matches against ranked foes since Henrique Cunha and Raphael Hemmeler won 13 consecutive from March 5 through May 16, 2013. Stachowiak went 17-18 overall, 9-14 in dual action and 2-6 versus league duos in doubles a season ago. He played all but five doubles matches on court one during the year.
The Blue Devils open their fall slate next Friday at the Gamecock Fall Invite in Columbia, S.C.
The first team rankings of the 2018-19 season will be released by the ITA on January 2, 2019.
