LAKE ELMO, Minn. – Behind a combined 11-under ledger by junior Ana Belac and sophomore Jaravee Boonchant, the fourth-ranked Duke women’s golf team carded a 10-under, 278, in the second round as the Blue Devils continued to lead the ANNIKA Intercollegiate presented by 3M. Duke owns a 19-under-par, 557, and leads by two strokes, while Belac holds the individual lead with a school-record 11-under, 133, at the 6,267-yard, Par 72 Royal Golf Club in Lake Elmo, Minn.

Belac along with Jiwon Jeon of Alabama set a new course record at the Royal Golf Club as they fired a seven-under, 65, in Tuesday’s second round. A native of Portoroz, Slovenia, Belac leads by one stroke, individually, over Alabama’s Kenzie Wright (-10, 134).

With rounds of 68 and 65 over the first two days, Belac’s 11-under, 133, set a new Duke 36-hole record, which was one stroke better than Amanda Blumenherst’s 134 she turned in at the Mason Rudolph Collegiate Classic in September of 2007.

Once again opening on hole No. 10, Belac kicked off her round with a sand save on the 348-yard, par four. She went on to hit the next 13 straight greens and notched birdies on No. 12, No. 13, No. 16, No. 18, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 to move to seven-under-par. Belac missed only two greens on the day. One was the 399-yard, par four sixth and she ended up with her lone bogey. She responded by draining a 20-foot birdie putt to get back to seven-under. Belac hit 16 greens, 12 fairways and had 27 putts.

Belac’s seven-under, 65, was a career best for the 2018 Honorable Mention All-America, while her eight birdies matched a career high. She has collected a tournament-best 15 birdies over the first two days.

“The big difference between today and yesterday for me was that I was rolling in some more putts and made less mistakes,” commented Belac. “But overall, the key for my good game was staying patient and hitting one shot at a time. I’m really proud of how my team is doing and supporting each other on and off the course.”

Boonchant backed up her three-under, 69, Monday with a four-under, 68, and is tied fifth overall with as seven-under, 137. A native of Bangkok, Thailand, Boonchant hit 15 greens, 14 fairways and rolled 30 putts on her way to registering five birdies.

She had a hot start with birdies on three out of her first five holes and then collected her fourth birdie on No. 17 to move to four-under through eight holes. Boonchant played her final 10 holes at even par with eight pars, one birdie on No. 3 and a bogey on No. 6.

Junior Virginia Elena Carta was under par for most of the day, after notching back-to-back birdies on No. 14 and No. 15. After suffering bogeys on No. 17 and No. 3, Carta once again collected back-to-back birdies on No. 4 and No. 5 to get back to red digits. Carta, who is from Udine, Italy, closed with two pars and two bogeys to finish at even par, 72. She is currently tied 14th with a three-under, 141. Carta hit 13 greens, 12 fairways and had 35 putts in the second round.

After a double-bogey to start her day, freshman Gina Kim came back to birdie the 396-yard, par four 13th with a short putt. She added birdies on No. 17, No. 4 and No. 8 on her way in, but also had three other bogeys on her way to signing for her second straight round of 73. Kim, a Chapel Hill, N.C., product, is tied 35th with a two-over, 146. She hit 12 greens, 10 fairways and had 31 putts.

For the second consecutive day, sophomore Miranda Wang carded a four-over, 76, and she is tied 52nd overall with 18 holes remaining. Wang, who hails from Beijing, China, was even par over her first 13 holes as she notched a birdie on the 314-yard, par four 15th. She finished four-over-par on her final five holes. Wang notched 4-of-8 up-and-downs on the day, while hitting 10 fairways, 10 greens and rolling 31 putts.

Duke enters the final day of action with a 19-under, 557, which is two strokes better than Alabama (559). UCLA (560), Southern California (561), Texas (566), Arkansas (567), South Carolina (578), Northwestern (579), Arizona (580), Oklahoma State (582), Stanford (583) and Minnesota (597) rounding out the field.

The Blue Devils’ score Tuesday could have been even better, but Duke was two-over-par during the final four holes, including five bogeys on the 399-yard, par four sixth. Duke was only two-under-par on the par fives Tuesday, after totaling a nine-under ledger Monday. With their 46 birdies in two days, the Blue Devils lead the field.

Duke will tee off Wednesday in the final round starting at 10:50 a.m., off hole No. 1 along with Alabama and UCLA. Live scoring will be available at www.GolfStat.com.
