LAKE ELMO, Minn. – After holding the team lead over the first 36 holes, the fourth-ranked Duke women’s golf team struggled in the final round of the ANNIKA Intercollegiate Wednesday on their way to finishing fifth overall at the 6,267-yard, Par 72 Royal Golf Club in Lake Elmo, Minn. The intercollegiate featured one of, if not, the best field Duke will face all season with nine of the top 10 teams in the preseason poll.

The Blue Devils shot a five-over, 293, on the final day, following signing for rounds of 279 and 278 for a combined 19-under, 557. The 36-hole total of 557 was the second-lowest 36-hole ledger in Duke history. Duke slipped from first to fifth, after Alabama, UCLA, Southern California and Texas turned in under-par scores in the final round.

Alabama won the title with a 28-under, 836, after notching an 11-under, 277, Wednesday. UCLA (838), Southern California (843), Texas (847), Duke (850), Arkansas (852), South Carolina (869) and Arizona (869) rounded out the top seven teams.

Duke junior Ana Belac finished fourth overall, after entering the final day with the lead at 11-under. She concluded the tournament with a career-best 10-under, 206, which was tied for the sixth-lowest 54-hole ledger in school history (on par 72) with rounds of 68, 65 and 73. A product of Portoroz, Slovenia, Belac had a slow start to the day with bogeys on each of her first four holes, but regrouped and rolled in a 25-foot birdie on No. 5 and birdied No. 7. After a bogey on the eighth hole, Belac played her final 10 holes of the tournament at two-under with birdies on No. 13 from seven feet and No. 18 from five feet. She hit 14 fairways, 11 greens and had 29 putts on the day.

Her 10-under, 54-hole score of 206 on a par 72 course was a career best and marked her fifth career top five placement. Belac led the field with 19 birdies and a 2.83 stroke average on par three holes over the last three days.

“Obviously, not the finish we wanted but overall the experience was productive.,” said Duke head coach Dan Brooks. “We’ll be getting after it for Chicago. I was real proud of Ana, a near win in a great field.”

UCLA’s Patty Tavatanakit posted a nine-under, 63, in the final round on her way to winning the individual title with a 13-under, 203. Malia Nam of Southern California (204) and Dylan Kim of Arkansas (205) finished second and third, respectively.

With back-to-back rounds in the 60s the first two days, sophomore Jaravee Boonchant was four shots off the individual lead heading into Wednesday’s play. Boonchant, who is from Bangkok, Thailand, signed for a two-over, 74, in the final round on her way to placing tied for 11th. She opened her day with bogeys on No. 4 and No. 9 as she made the turn at two-over, 38. Boonchant collected her first birdie of the day on the 160-yard, par three 12th to get back to one-over-par. She added bogeys on No. 13 and No. 16, before closing with her 12th birdie of the tournament to finish with a 74.

Senior Virginia Elena Carta posted Duke’s first birdie of the day on the par five second hole, but went on to play the next 12 holes at five-over-par. She registered her second birdie on No. 15, before closing with three straight pars. Carta, who hails from Udine, Italy, finished the week tied for 25th with rounds of 69, 72 and 75 for even-par, 216. She hit 13 fairways, 15 greens and had 37 putts on the day.

Coming off back-to-back rounds of 73 to open her collegiate career, freshman Gina Kim closed the tournament with her first under-par score of one-under, 71. She placed tied for 29th overall with a 217. Kim, who is from Chapel Hill, N.C., had bogeys on No. 2 and No. 4 to open the day, but closed her final 14 holes at three-under. She hit 12 greens, 11 fairways and had 29 putts.

For the third consecutive day, sophomore Miranda Wang signed for a four-over, 76, on her way to placing tied for 53rd overall. A native of Beijing, China, Wang struggled with her approach shots as she hit four of 18 greens. She chipped in on 180-yard, par three 16th as hit her 54-wedge from 20 yards into the cup for her lone birdie of the day. She hit eight fairways and rolled 25 putts.
