DURHAM, N.C.—Duke sophomore Matthias Frick’s impact on both sides of the ball left an impression on College Soccer News as the outlet selected him to its Team of the Week for game ending Oct. 7. Frick scored a goal and helped anchor the Blue Devil defense to two wins last week.
In a midweek game with Wofford, Frick played 79 minutes and was instrumental in Duke building a 4-1 lead before being subbed out for just the second time of the season. After Wofford scored in the 10th minute, Frick and the Duke defense held the Terriers scoreless and to just three more shots through the 79th minute.
Three days later, the native of Austria gave Duke a crucial 2-0 cushion against 10th-ranked Virginia as he headed home a Max Moser free kick. The goal was the second of the season for Frick and helped hand Virginia its first loss of the season. It also marked the first time all season a team had scored multiple goals versus the Cavaliers.
Frick, a stalwart left back, has started all 10 games this season and has played all but 18 minutes. He has two goals, including one game winner, as well as being a part of two shutouts.
The Blue Devils are 6-3-1 overall and ranked 17th in the most recent College Soccer News poll. They return to action Tuesday night against Campbell. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., on ACC Network Extra.
