CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – For the fifth time out of the last six years and the 16th time in school history, the Duke women’s golf program has captured the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational title as the Blue Devils carded a 14-under-par, 850, over three days to win by six strokes at the 6,379-yard, par 72 Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Boosted by a 17-under, 271, on day one, the Blue Devils turned in rounds of 290 and 289 over the next two days to finish with the win over sixth-ranked Virginia (856). Ninth-ranked Arkansas (859), South Carolina (866), Wake Forest (868), Vanderbilt (877), Clemson (886), North Carolina (886), Michigan State (887) and Louisville (890) closed out the top 10 teams. The 54-hole ledger of 850 was the tied for third-lowest score in Tar Heel Invitational history.

“It’s great to be rewarded for efforts that have been consistent throughout our fall so far,” commented Duke head coach Dan Brooks. “We just haven’t had the day’s come together for a win and we finally did.”

The victory for Duke also marked the 134th career win for Brooks, which continues to lead all NCAA Division I women’s golf head coaches. It is also the first win of the season for Brooks’ squad.

The Blue Devils featured three golfers in the top eight of the individual leaderboard, led by junior Ana Belac with her second top-five finish out of three tournaments on the year. Belac turned in rounds of 68, 72 and 70 for a six-under, 210, to finish third. Senior Virginia Elena Carta tallied a season-best tied for fifth placement, while sophomore Jaravee Boonchant registered a tied for eighth finish.

“What we have on our team is a lot of passion and it’s wonderful,” said Brooks. “There’s great desire on the team, top to bottom—everybody wants to do well and they’re willing to put in the work, so we’ve got a bunch of good problems. They’re problems that every coach hopes to have and that’s players wanting it so bad they tend to get in their own way.”

Duke finished the weekend with a team-best 53 birdies and was 19-under-par on par fives, which also led all teams.

A native of Portoroz, Slovenia, Belac finished five shots off the individual lead held by Emilia Migliaccio of Wake Forest (205) and one shot off of second place behind Dylan Kim of Arkansas (209).

On Sunday, Belac posted a team-best two-under, 70, with four birdies. She was dialed in early as she stuck approach shots to five feet on No. 3 and one foot on No. 4, before rolling in back-to-back birdies. Belac headed to the 13th hole at one-under-par, after suffering a bogey on No. 9. On the 481-yard, par five 13th, she stuck another approach to within one foot to move to two-under-par. After a bogey on No. 16, Belac closed with yet another birdie on No. 18 as she drained a 15-footer. She hit 15 greens, 10 fairways and had 30 putts in the final round.

With rounds of 68, 70 and 74, Carta turned in her sixth career top-five finish as she shot four-under for the tournament. Carta, who hails from Udine, Italy, opened her day with back-to-back birdies on No. 2 from eight feet and No. 3 from 10 feet to move to two-under-par early. She would then play the next nine holes at four-over-par to move to two-over for the day. Carta added a five-foot birdie on the 481-yard, par five 13th followed by four pars and a bogey on No. 17 to finish her weekend. She hit 16 greens, nine fairways and rolled 36 putts.

Boonchant, who is from Bangkok, Thailand, played her first 12 holes of Sunday’s round with 11 pars and a bogey on the 343-yard, par four second hole. She closed strong birding both of the remaining par fives, No. 13 and No. 17, to finish with a one-under, 71. Boonchant held a three-under, 213, ledger over the three days.

For the second straight day, sophomore Miranda Wang signed for a 76 on her way to placing tied for 29th overall with a 221. Wang, a product of Beijing, China, was five-over in her final round through 11 holes, but closed bogey-free over her final seven holes. She sank a birdie putt on the challenging par five 18th to close strong.

Freshman Gina Kim featured a one-under-par ledger through 14 holes Sunday, but suffered a double-bogey on No. 17 and bogey on No. 1 to finish with a two-over, 74. She placed tied for 48th with a nine-over, 225, but was only two-over-par over the final 38 holes. Kim, who is from Chapel Hill, N.C., hit 11 fairways, 13 greens and had 32 putts.

Duke will next travel to Wilmington, N.C., for the Landfall Tradition Oct. 26-28 at The Country Club of Landfall.
