DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke men's tennis doubles tandem of junior Spencer Furman and sophomore Sean Sculley pushed the top-ranked pair at the ITA Carolina Regional to the tiebreaker, but came up just short in their bid to reach the quarterfinals.
Furman and Sculley dropped a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (6) decision to the No. 1 seed of South Carolina's Yancy Dennis and Paul Jubb on Sunday at the Cary Tennis Park. Sculley and Furman, the No. 11 seed, were playing together for the first time in their careers this weekend and advanced to the Round of 16.
Freshman Robert Maciag also completed his run at the ITA Carolina Regional with a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Furman's Jake Munns in the consolation Round of 16. Maciag, who was moved to the semifinals with a walkover, won three contested matches this weekend after dropping his Round of 128 match in the main draw. The consolation draw completed competition Sunday with the quarterfinals.
