DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke rowing team will begin its fall campaign this weekend, traveling to Boston, Mass., to take part in the 54th annual Head of the Charles.
The Blue Devils will send a pair of boats into action this weekend with a club 4 and a championship 8 boat. The club 4 will kick off competition Saturday at 1:53 p.m., while the championship 8 boats are slated to compete Sunday at 2:26 p.m.
The Blue Devils’ club 4 boat will be coxed by Leeloo Gilet, who is set to begin her sophomore campaign. Gilet will be joined by the freshmen foursome of Amelia Shunk, Gabby Salvati, Grace Butero and McKendree Densel—all making their collegiate debuts.
The duo of Sydney Johnson and Katarina Kern will also make their collegiate debuts this weekend, competing in the Blue Devils’ championship 8 boat on Sunday. The boat will also include Isabel Ruby-Hill, Shannon Tierney, Caitlyn Carlisle, Lelia Boley, Katherine Lustig and Olivia Mendonca, with Tara Fagan serving as the coxswain.
Additionally, several Duke alums will take the course this weekend to represent the Blue Devils in the women’s alumni eights Saturday. In bow number six, there will be coxswain Emilie Marchetti, Tonia Sackett, Anna Juraschek, Alex Japhet, Rachel Wolsfelt, Emily Herrington, Meaghan Treanor, Sophia Staal and Julie Rohde.
The Head of the Charles serves as Duke’s first event of the fall, as the Blue Devils look to improve upon their performance from a year ago where the club 4 boat captured a sixth-place finish and the champ 8 boat placed 19th. The Blue Devil rowing squad is coming off a third-place finish at the ACC Championship last spring. Following this weekend’s race, Duke will have three fall events remaining with the Princeton Chase, Head of the Hooch and Rivanna Romp.
