CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Duke women’s tennis program continued its strong start at the 2018 ITA Regional Friday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the campus of the University of North Carolina.
The lone Blue Devil doubles team this weekend, senior Kaitlyn McCarthy and junior Meible Chi, kicked off the second day of competition strong with an 8-2 victory over Appalachian State’s Teodora Sevo and Rebecca Morse. McCarthy and Chi will take on North Carolina’s Cameron Morra and Makenna Jones Saturday in the quarterfinals.
McCarthy and Chi carried their strong performances to singles action as the two combined to go 4-0 overall.
McCarthy, ranked No. 84 in the ITA preseason rankings, started off with a victory in the Round of 64 over Giulia Turconi of South Carolina (6-2, 6-2) before going on to defeat NC State’s Bianca Moldovan (7-6, 6-2) in the Round of 32.
Chi, ranked No. 31 in the preseason rankings, advanced to the Round of 32 by downing Daniela Naupari of Gardner-Webb (6-1, 6-1) in the opening round and went on to defeat South Carolina’s Silvia Chinellato (6-2, 4-6, 6-1).
McCarthy will play Sara Daavettila while Chi faces Cameron Morra, both of North Carolina, Saturday morning in the Round of 16.
