DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women’s basketball team went on a 15-5 run late in the fourth quarter on its way to downing Marist, 64-56, Sunday afternoon in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Junior Leaonna Odom scored 11 of her 20 points in the fourth quarter to spark the Blue Devils, who improve to 5-3 on the season and won their 17th straight contest in Cameron Indoor Stadium in the month of December. Redshirt junior Haley Gorecki added 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five steals on the afternoon.
Duke got on the board quickly in the first quarter as the Blue Devils received the opening tip and junior Leaonna Odom scored just seven seconds into play off an assist from senior Faith Suggs, who was seeing action in her 100th career contest. Freshman Onome Akinbode-James, who was coming off a career game at Wisconsin, was saddled with two fouls in the first three minutes of the game and was forced to exit the contest.
After the score was knotted, 7-7, Marist went on a 6-0 run to go ahead, 13-7. Sophomore Jade Williams registered two layups over the final minute of the first quarter to cut the Red Foxes lead to 13-11, where play finished at the end of the first 10 minutes. Alana Gilmer of Marist scored 11-of-13 first quarter points for the Red Foxes.
Marist continued to lead the contest in the second quarter, before freshman Miela Goodchild connected on back-to-back three-pointers to give Duke a 22-21 lead with 3:41 left in the half. The Blue Devils held a 28-26 lead up until the last second as Allie Best of Marist hit a last second three-pointer to give the Red Foxes a 29-28 lead at the break.
Williams paced the Blue Devils with nine points and four rebounds in 16 first half minutes, while Goodchild scored all seven of her points in the second quarter.
A native of The Colony, Texas, Williams tallied a layup 31 seconds into the third quarter to give Duke a 30-29 advantage, but Marist would regain the lead a minute later on a three-pointer by Rebekah Hand. The Red Foxes would lead the rest of the third quarter until sophomore Jayda Adams drained her fourth three-pointer of the season from the right corner to put the Blue Devils ahead, 42-41, with 54 seconds left.
Heading into the fourth quarter, Duke led 42-41 with Gorecki (12) and Williams (11) pacing the Blue Devils on the scoreboard.
Odom scored Duke’s first six points of the fourth quarter, including the go ahead bucket at the 7:35 mark to give the Blue Devils a 46-45 lead. Akinbode-James had a big offensive rebound and put back, while also getting fouled. She converted the three-point play to put the Blue Devils ahead 51-47 at the 5:31 mark.
Odom registered her fourth double-double of the season and eighth of her career with 20 points and 11 rebounds. She also reached the 20-point mark for the second time this season. Williams matched season highs with 11 points and eight rebounds in 34 minutes.
Marist (6-2) was led by Gilmer with 25 points.
Duke will continue its three-game homestand Thursday, Dec. 6 as the Blue Devils host UNLV at 7 p.m. The contest will be aired live on ACC Network Extra.
