DURHAM, N.C. – Following a successful opening weekend at the Penn State Duals, the Duke fencing team will be back in action Saturday, Jan. 19 for the Philadelphia Invitational at the Tse Ping-Cheng Cheung Ling Sports Center on Penn’s campus.
In their last trip to the state of Pennsylvania, the Blue Devil women went 4-2 on the day while the men posted a 2-3 ledger. Both squads defeated Penn (W: 18-9, M: 14-13) and will face the Quakers for the second-consecutive week in addition to Brown, Cornell (W), Haverford, NJIT and Yale.
The Blue Devil rookies look to continue their strong performances during week two of competition as five freshmen posted 10 or more victories last weekend. Alex Gorman headlined the saber squad with a 14-4 record, followed by epeeist Ava Navarro with a nearly perfect 14-1 ledger. Foilist Zoe Superville (13-5) and epeeist Huda Aldadah (11-5) rounded out the quartet’s Duke Debut. Additionally, Terence Lee racked up a 12-3 record in saber during his first outing in a Duke lamé.
2018 All-America honoree and ACC Fencer of the Year Eoin Gronningsater spearheaded the men’s contingent with a nearly flawless 12-1 ledger in foil while 2018 ACC epee gold medalist Bryn Hammarberg also saw success in Penn State with 10 victories.
