BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Duke track & field program concluded competition at the Hokie Invitational Sunday with five first-place finishes and 20 overall top-10 performances during the final day of competition. As a team, the Blue Devils captured eight first-place wins and 39 top-10 finishes over two days.

“It was a really good second weekend for Duke track & field,” head coach Norm Ogilvie said. “We’re making progress and we’re looking forward to going up to New York next weekend to compete against some of the very best teams in the country.”

The Blue devils came away sweeping two events Saturday as sophomore Leigha Torino and junior Matt Wisner claimed the top spots in the 800m while distance runners Dalton Randall and Michael Ungvarsky took one and two, respectively, in the 5000m.

Torino clocked in a time of 2:13.06 while Wisner posted an ACC qualifying time of 1:50.50 after placing second yesterday in the 1000m. In the 5000m, Randall crossed the finish line first in a time of 14:45.17 followed by Ungvarsky in 14:57.67.

For the second week in a row, junior Cassie Martin clinched the top spot in high jump with a height of 5-6.00 (1.68). Last weekend at the Carolina Cup, Martin cleared 5-7.00 (1.70) and will enter the third week of competition unbeaten.

Also remaining undefeated is the women’s distance medley relay who clocked in a season-best time of 11:32.90 to capture first place this afternoon.

Additionally, several Blue Devils posted ACC qualifying marks in field events. Jaida Lemmons secured an indoor personal-best mark of 19-1.25 (5.82) in the long jump while Bryant Lewis qualified for his first ACC indoor competition in the high jump with a personal-best clearance of 6-7.00 (2.01). Esteban Suarez also qualified for the conference championships with a height of 16-4.75 (5.00) in the pole vault.

Additionally, Ben Beatty saw great success in shot put with a personal-best throw of 55-3.50 (16.85).

Duke will return to competition for the Armory Collegiate Jan. 24-26, in New York, N.Y.
