DURHAM, N.C. – With the 2019 season opener a little under a month away, head coach Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are excited to announce catcher Chad Knight as part of the Blue Devils’ most recent recruiting class.
“Chad Knight really projects with the hit tool,” said Pollard. “He really projects with a lot of power and can play a lot of different positions. He can play either corner spot in the infield and either corner spot in the outfield and is also growing behind the plate. He has a chance to be a catcher both at the college level and beyond, along with a really advanced hit tool. He’s a good runner for his size and also does some pitching as well. He’s been up over 90 miles per hour on the mound.”
Hailing from Westport, Conn., Knight is a four-year letterwinner at Staples High School, and has served as the co-captain of his varsity squad for the past two seasons. As a junior, Knight hit .408, slugged .690, and sported a .571 on-base percentage across 24 starts on his way to being named both the Fairfield County Interscholastic Conference (FCIAC) Player of the Year and the Ruden Report Spring Athlete of the Year.
A two-time Gametime Connecticut All-State Team honoree, Knight was selected to the USA Today All-Connecticut Second Team after receiving first team honors from USA Today as a sophomore. He was also tabbed to the Connecticut High School Coaches Association Class LL Division All-State first team both his sophomore and junior seasons.
A Perfect Game Underclass All-American High Honorable Mention Selection, Knight is rated as PG’s No. 318 overall prospect and the No. 33 catcher in the 2019 recruiting class. In addition, the organization also lists Knight as the No. 2 overall prospect and the top-rated catcher in the state of Connecticut.
Knight is part of Duke’s 12-member 2019 recruiting class along with LHP Michael Foltz (Myrtle Beach, N.C.), 1B/OF Britt Fuller (Charlotte, N.C.), RHP Marcus Johnson (Fontana, Calif.), INF/RHP Thomas Keehn (Highland, Md.), LHP Clark Klitenic (Bethesda, Md.), INF Grant Norris (Somerset, Pa.), INF Graham Pauley (Milton, Ga.), RHP Billy Seidl (Wellesley, Mass.), OF Sam Siani (Glendale, Pa.), RHP Colten Smith (Colmar, Pa.) and RHP Henry Williams (Darien, Conn.).
